World War 2, commenced 70 years ago on September 1st 1939, with the German invasion of Poland, without warning, sparking the start of World War II. By the evening of September 3rd, Britain and France were at war with Germany and within a week, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa had also joined the war. The world had been plunged into its second world war in 25 years.
Britain had made a pledge to stand by Poland. Most MPs were very concerned. By evening of 2 September it appeared the government might fall the next day unless war was declared.
At 0900 on the morning of 3 September, the British Ambassador in Berlin presented an ultimatum to Hitler demanding he respond in two hours. No answer was received
Britain, France, Australia and New Zealand declare war on Germany, and a day later the Royal Air Force attacks the German Navy.
The United States proclaims its neutrality. On 10 September Canada declares war on Germany and the Battle of the Atlantic begins as the Germans attempt to sever Allied supply routes.

Terrific
fighting at Kiev was reported by Red Star, official organ of the soviet army,
today in a dispatch which admitted that "the Germans, like vicious beasts,
are hammering at the city."
(Russia has not
yet conceded the fall of Kiev, which the Germans claim to have taken yesterday.)
"Piles of
bodies, wrecked tanks and armored cars clutter the approaches to Kiev,"
Red Star said. "The fascists are throwing in more and more troops."
Battle on
Outskirts.
Red Star said
that an especially bloody battle was raging on the southern boundaries and in
the northern suburbs of Kiev where popular guards bolstering the red army were
reported to be "fighting like lions."

BERLIN, Sept. 19.—(U.P)—
The German high command reported
tonight that nazi troops have stormed their way into Kiev and that the nazi war
banner now flies high over the ancient capital of the Ukraine. The Wehrmacht
was rolling faster than at any time since the start of the war in the east.
Nazi forces, the high command said,
have swept forward on both sides of Kiev to capture Poltava, only 75 miles from
Kharkov, and now stand on the approaches to the great Donets-Don industrial basin,
the richest industrial sector in Russia.
From Moscow, the red army reported picked
German panzer
and
air units hammering into the outskirts of Kiev in the
Ukraine and said a furious new enemy offensive had been hurled against Russian
defenses on the Vtlikie Luki sector of the central front. The Russians have
destroyed at least four German divisions in the "sausage
grinder" defense of Kiev and killed some 30,000 in Go/ojeyev forest
alone, the
war dispatches said. At
Leningrad, the Russians reported, fierce fighting still in progress.

THE BLOG BEGINS
This is E. T,s first post to his blog-site. My plans are( until 3: PM) are to fill in bits of my personal history/current events during the time that I grew up for those that maybe interested.
This will include HEADLINES and captions from newspapers presenting current events when he and his freinds were much younger. These historical events created life experiences that I believe to be interesting. This will include E T's service in the United States Maritime Service and the Merchant Marine during WW 2.
