LONG BEACH, Calif. Dec. 24--(AP)-- The McCormick freighter Absaroka was torpedoed but not sunk today by a submarine off the California coast and attempts were made quickly to tow it to a harbor. Some observers from shore said that it appeared to have been crippled. Later it disapeared.

(E T's note) This ship did make it to a harbor and was made famous by a full page picture (Jan, 26, 1942 issue of Life Magazine) of Jane Russel standing in a gaping hole in the side of the ship holding a sign stating “A SLIP OF THE LIP MAY SINK A SHIP” someone had crossed out SINK and inserted HAVE SUNK THIS.)
