MOSCOW, Feb. 6.—(INS)—

Soviet troops in the northwest Caucus today captured the keyjunction

of Bataisk to sweep to within five miles south of Rostov,

and simultaneously reached the Sea of Azov to occupy Yeisk

and complete a land trap around some 200,000 Nazis.

This was announced tonight in a

special communique which told also of the capture- of three important

railway towns in a scythe shaped sweep into the Ukraine that

neared Kharkov and threatened to close another trap behind an estimated

quarter million Nazis in the Rostov-Donets region.

On Feb. 6," said the special bulletin, recounting further Red

army gains of as much as 20 to 25 miles in a single day, "our troops

in the Ukraine, as a result of fierce fighting, captured the town and,

railway station of Lisichansk, the town and railway station of Barvenkovo

and the town and railway station of Balakleya.

—The command of Lt. Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower was ex-

panded tonight to include direction of all U. S. forces in the

Middle East, as well as the Allied forces in French Africa. j

This further step toward unification of the Allied command

throughout North Africa was announced following the disclosure

that German troops, counter-attacking, despite the return of. inclement

weather in upper Tunisia, had recaptured a height from the

British.

WASHINGTON, Feb. 6.—(INS)

—Secretary of the Navy Knox today announced renewal of

Japanese air attacks on American positions in the western

Aleutian islands simultaneously with the continuing sea-air engagements

between U. S. and Japanese forces. in the Solomon

islands area.

Only "moderate losses," the naval secretary declared, have been sustained

by either the American or enemy surface and air fleets in the

series of actions which have been going on in the vicinity of Guadal-

canal for 10 days.

•MOSCOW,..Feb. fi.—(IP)—Russian troops > have -captured the

city of Bataisk, 10 miles south of Rostov, a special. Soviet .ommultique

said tonight.- The Red army also has cut through to the

shores of the sea of Azov and captured Yeisk, 70 miles southwest

of Rostov, the communique said.

MOSCOW, Feb. 6.—(U.P.)—

The Red army, breaking across the Donetz river, rolled into

flat country less than 70 miles southeast of Kharkov today,

and here in Moscow the public was primed for the imminent

announcement of a great victory—perhaps the fall of the

Caucasion gateway city of Rostov.

(There were unconfirmed reports in London -that Bataisk, 10

miles south of Rostov, already had fallen)

Washington February 6 (U.P.) —- Secretary of _ the Navy

Frank Knox said today that both American and Japanese

forces have suffered "moderate"

losses of ships and planes in the air-sea actions which are

still continuing in the Solomons area.

But, he told a press conference, there was "nothing significant—"

nothing of a major character"—in these losses.

New U. S. Attacks

A navy communique reported three more U. S. air attacks on

Japanese bases in the Solomons. A bombing assault also was made on

the enemy's Aleutian island base at Kiska in apparent retaliation

for a raid on American positions in the Western Aleutians.

LONDON, Feb. 6. — (U.P.) —

Diplomatic sources in Sweden said today that Premier Benito

Mussolini shook up the Italian cabinet to nip a plan for a separate

peace by hIs son-in-law, Count Galeazzo Ciano, and two

other prominent Italians. Ciano, whom Mussolini removed

as foreign minister,

Count Dino "Gfandi, discharged as justice minister, and Marshal Pietro

Bagelio, former chief of the general staff, were reported to have

demanded that Mussolini withdraw from active politics to enable them

to "pave the way to peace,"a Stockholm dispatch said.

"German Interference"

"The Germans, however, intervened and threatened immediate

military occupation," the dispatch said. "Yesterday's shakeup thus

was believed the result of German interference."

WASHINGTON, Feb.5,—(U.P)—The week-long series of

air-Sea engagements in the Solomons, now described by the

navy as '-sporadic encounters," is still continuing, the navy announced

today. It was said, however, that the tempo of the

Japanese air activity over Guadalcanal appeared to be increasing.

And that was all the navy's communique had to say about the action,

which it originally described as a "major effort" by the Japanese

to regain control of the Solomon Islands.

It might be well for the carriers. American public to prepare for

possible had news from the south Pacific. -. The fact that.

Navy Department communiques for days have withheld all information

regarding naval and air engagements in the Solomons

area is somewhat ominous. The navy says no news will be

released as long as such action might jeopardize U. S. forces in

that area, now or in the future. The only news which could be

of great value to the Japanese would be news of American

losses.

Although our gallant navy and air forces have won several

victories against the Japanese, at no time since Pearl Harbor

have our naval forces in the Pacific

been equal numerically to the Japanese. Unquestionably,

that still holds true—that we are outnumbered in the present battle

area, particularly in aircraft carriers.

LONDON, Feb. 5.—(U,P.)—The

Royal Air Force carried the allied non-stop aerial offensive to

France again today; following up heavy night attacks on Turin

and Spezi. in Northeastern Italy, the industrial Ruhr in

Germany, and the U-boat base at Lorient on the coast of

France.

Southeast coast watchers reported that many RAF squadrons

crossed the channel to France this afternoon, flying high in the clouds.

Germany made another of its weak daylight reprisals. Four

raiders bombed and machinegunned a south coast town this afternoon,

damaging many houses and causing some casualties. One

enemy plane was believed shot down into the sea.

MOSCOW, Feb. 5.—(U.P)—Russia closed the jaws of a trap

on the German army of the. Caucasus today and wiped out 7 more

encircled remnants of another trapped enemy army on the Kursk

front, 280 miles south of Moscow. Driving westward below the Yeya;

river after cutting off the last30 miles means of escape by railroad for the

enemy Caucasus army by taking Kushclicvka, and then capturing

Staro Minskaya, 27 miles to the west, the Russians were nearing

Sea of Azov coast.

ALLIED HEADQUARTERS, North Africa, Feb. 5.—(U.P.)—

Led by American Flying Fortresses, allied aircraft destroyed

52 enemy planes over Tunisia yesterday, against a loss of only 10

of their own, headquarters disclosed today.

WASHINGTON, ."Feb. 4—(U.P)—Reinforced Japanese airmen

have carried out a series of night raids ''on American positions

on Guadalcanal, the navy announced today.

The navy's communique announcing the raids shed no new

light on the series of air-naval engagements in the Solomons

area. It said merely that details of the actions will not be announced

so long as "such, information might jeopardize, the safety of our forces

in the area of operations."

LONDON Feb. 4.—(U.P.)—Flying Fortresses attacked targets

in Northwestern Germany today, a United States army air force

communique said.,Five,.of;.the:bombers were missing. Strong formations"

of enemy fighters were encountered.

LONDON, Feb. 4—(U.P.)—United'-States heavy bombers

flown by American crew carried out their second major raid on

tie reich today, bombing targets in Northwestern Germany.

The raid was the second American attack upon Germany in

eight days. United States planes raided the big German naval

base at Wilhelmshaven and Industrial targets at Emden and other

places in Northwest Germany on January 27 in their first assault on

German soil in this war.

Premier Tojo was quoted by the Tokyo radio as declaring

“Japan will fight to the end to crush America, so long as America

persists in obstructing Japan's war aims. But Japan has absolutely no

territorial ambitions in the Unit-

ed States or in South American."

The Premier spoke at a meeting- of the"budget committee of the

lower house of the Diet.

Japs Do No Damage In

Sunday-Monday Raids

WASHIINGTON — The Navy Department reported that Jap

planes had attacked American positions in the Western Aleutians

on Sunday and Monday but caused no damage.

. . This was the first attack reported on the U. S. bases there

since June, although on January 28th. two Jap planes bombed American

ships operating to the westward of our positions, which

were not specifically identified. The raids were reported in a

communique which disclosed heavy air activity over the weekend

in the South Pacific.

One attack against the Jap held Shortland area of the north

western Solomons was made by a flight of Flying Fortresses.

Twenty enemy Zero fighters intercepted the American planes

and three Fortresses were missing and a fourth badly damaged.

Two American dive bombers were also reported missing, having failed

to return from a raid on the Jap air base at Munda in the cen-

iral Solomons.

WASHINGTON — The American and Japanese sea and air

forces were locked in a major new struggle for the control of

the Solomon Islands, the Navy Department revealed in a commun-

ique, which said that a number of surface and air actions had

occurred during the lust several days.

WASHINGTON — Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox described

the sea battle now in progress off the Solomons as a "process of

feeling out by both sides." but said that no really pitched battle

had as yet begun. He said nobody knows yet what

the immediate future Holds but any assumption in the Navy com

munique of yesterday afternoon that a major battle was underway

was incorrect.

— A Japanese army spokesman outlined the plans of the Japanese

Imperial forces for the future. The Nipponese intend to complete

the capture of China, occupy India, Australia and

Huwaii.

(U.P)—The selective service bureau partially lifted the ban on

drafting: fathers today by abolishing deferments on April 1,

regardless of dependents," for men engaged in 29 occupations

employed in 19 Industries.

WASHINGTON, Feb. 2—(UP)

The"navy announced late today;.that:,.the Japanese are

making a major effort to regain control of the entire Solomons

area and that both sides have suffered losses in a series of air-naval

action.

The navy's communique did not locate the scene of action.

The Japanese, who on Monday were the first to announce a

sea battle was in progress, said that the action was west of

Rennell island. This is approximately 180 miles south of

Guadalcanal.

A gigantic allied grand strategy program neared the action stage

today after a secret visit by P r i m e M i n i s t e r Winston

Curchill to the Middle East, climaxed by a two-day conference

with President Isniet Inonu and other Turkish political and military

leaders.

From Casablanca, It was revealed last night that

Churchill had come to Egypt after his momentous Casablanca conference

with President Roosevelt, at which the basis was laid for allied

offensive action to crush the axis into unconditional surrender.

Japs Fail in

Alaska Raid

WASHINGTON, Feb. 2.—(UP)—

American and Japanese airmen have exchanged n^v blows along

a wide arc of the Pacific from the Aleutians to the Solomon islands

the navy announced today. Army planes attacked Japanese

shipping at Tarawa island in the Gilbert group while other Amer-

ican airmen carried out four raids on Japanese bases in the Central

Solomons. A fifth American attack by flying fortresses was

turned back.

Meanwhile, Japanese planes made two fruitless attacks on

United States positions in the Western Aleutians, presumably in

the Andreanof islands.

American surface forces also were represented in the latest actions,

which covered four days. A destroyer shelled enemy barges off

Cape Esperance on Guadalcanal island.

London, Feb. 1 — United States troops were stabbing

at German positions in three central Tunisian sectors today

in aerially screened operations that may lead to the

long-awaited general offensive and the final battle for

North Africa.

British forces in the Roboa area ta the north met and

repulsed a German attack led by 52-ton tanks, the monstrous

new Mark Vl's, which are shielded by seven-inch thick

armor and mount 88-millimeter guns. The British

wrecked two of the Mark Vl's and four lighter tanks.

The British Eighth, army moved

westward again less than 35 miles from the frontier of Tunisia, following

patrols Which already hive speared into the French protectorate,

further shortening the corridor left to Marshal Rommel and Col.

Gen. Jurgen von Arnim.

Senate today, with a. request for ratification, the treaty by which the

United States relinquishes extraterritorial rights in China.

The treaty was signed here Jan, 11 by Secretary Hull and the

Chinese ambassador.
