—Allied troops have halted a two-column German drive

in northeastern Tunisia and American planes continued

to hammer the corridor thru which the routed Afrika

Korps must flee from Tripoli. it was disclosed today.

LONDON, Jan. 23—(UP),

—The British Eighth Army marched into Tripoli and;

hoisted the Union Jack at. A. M. today and then sent

striking forces racing west of Benito Mussolinis

last African capital in an attempt to encircle and annihilate

Axis forces straggling into Tunisia.

SAN FRANCISCO. Jan. 23—(UP)

—Army and Navy aircraft. Coastal vessels and ground parties searched

the California coastline and inland territory today for two Navy transport

planes missing- with 23 officers

and enlisted men aboard.

One was a giant seaplane—carrying1 10 officer passengers and a crew

of nine from Pearl Harbor—which has been missing since Thursday morning

when fog and bad weather prevented a landing: near San Francisco. The second

plane, a cargo transport, has been missing- since Thursday with its

crew of three officers and three enlisted men on a flight from Winslow.

GEN. MacAATHUR'S HEADQUARTERS,

Australia, Jan. 23 (UP;)—American and Australian

troops after smashing the last organized Japanese resistance in

Papua, hunted down today the handful of tattered, hungry,

fever-ridden fugitives who remained of an enemy army that,

four months ago, 15,000 strong,was within 32 miles of Port-

Moresby.

Gen. Douglas MacArlhur announced in a communique,

that the last three enemy pockets of resistance, two

flanking Sanananda point on the north coast of New Guinea,

the third inland, had been broken and that 725 enemy

dead had been counted. The day before 150 Japanese

had been killed when the first of the enemy pockets was

taken.

LONDON — (AP) — The conquering British Eighth

army wrested Tripoli from the Axis Saturday and the conquest

of Premier Mussolini's African empire, which Prime

Minister Churchill pledged in 1940 would be torn "to shreds

and tatters," was all but complete. Rear guards left behind by

Marshal Rommel to slow the pursuit of his main forces into

Tunisia were overwhelmed and

the British took possession of the burning city at 5 a. m.,

officials announced in Cairo. "Our forward troops entered Tripoli

early this morning," British headquarters announced.

Russian Army Captures

German Air Base at Salsk

MOSCOW— (AP) —Soviet troops, smashing through the

German defense lines along the Manych waterway, have

captured the railroad center and air base of Salsk, 100

miles southeast of Rostov, and dispersed fresh German forces

which for a time threatened to slow the Russian advance

in southwestern sectors, dispatches from the front said

Saturday.

RAF Stabs at

Western Germany

LONDON—(AP)-For the second successive night British bombers

were reported Saturday to have stabbed during the night at Western

Germany, which embraces the great Industrial Ruhr valley and

such important centers as Duesseldorf, Essen, Duisburg, Cologne and

Frankfurt.

First news of the raid came from the Berlin radio, which said scattered

bombings had caused civilian casualties and some property damage.

The RAF had been over Germanyon 12 previous nights this month,

including the heavy attacks on Berlin last Saturday and Sunday.

German planes struck back by

bombing several places in Northeastern and Southern England Friday

night, but the raids were not on ra heavy scale and while damage

was done casualties were reported light.

Marines at Guadalcanal, In Combat Five Months, Are Given ResT

WASHINGTON, Jan. 21 (AP)—

The United States Marines who knocked the Japs out of Henderson

Airfield and then waged a campaign

of elimination against enemy forces in the Guadalcanal jungle are headed

for a rest today after spending more time in battle than any other unit of

American troops in recent history. Under-Secretary of War Robert

Patterson disclosed today that Army ground troops have replaced the Marines

in the Solomons under command of Maj. Gen. Alexander Patch, who moved his

headquarters from New Caledonia to Guadalcanal.

The Marines who fought so long

and well in the Solomons are now getting a chance to rest." Mr. Patterson said.

Gen. Patch, who commanded the Army troops which landed at New Caledonia

last -year, relieved Maj. Gen. Alexander Vandergrift, of the Marines, not quite

a month ago, Mr. Patferson said.

Army There For Months

The Navy Department, announcing the change simultaneously, gave no indication

of what assignment would be given to Gen. Vandergrift, who has been in command

since the initial occupation of the position on the island.

The Marines have been operating jointly with Army troops in this area for

several months, during which period most of the Marines who made the original

landing on Guadalcanal were replaced by Army personnel," a Navy communique

said.

Quick Juncture With Axis in Tunisia, Rommel's Plan

Sweeping westward from Horns and northwest from Tarhuna, the

Eighth Army yesterday neared the hills surrounding Tripoli without a

pause in keeping its steady pressure on Rommel.

Under mounting air blows the Axis withdrawal was showing further signs

of disorganization, but there was yet no authoritative indication that

Tripoli it self was being evacuated, British military sources said.

While Gen. Montgomery's progress was eminently satisfactory, the sources warned

against " crystal gazing." Reports from other parts of Africa credited the British

with greater progress than they actually had made, it was pointed out. It was

emphasized that after Tripoli at least another 100 miles of fighting must be done

before the army could cross the border into Tunisia.

Isolated Enemy Pockets On Sanananda Still Hold Out

ALLIED HEADQUARTERS, Australia, Jan. 21 (AP)—American and

Australian ground troops are hacking away at isolated enemy pockets of resistance

and had further reduced the enemy hold in the Sanananda sector of New

Guinea, while in the air the Allied bombers raided 10 enemy points.

Allied medium bombers attacked the jetty at Dobo. Three enemy float planes

attempted interception and one was probably destroyed. At Ambon, an

Allied heavy unit shot down an enemy fighter which was attempting interception.

An Allied medium unit bombed enemy localities at Lautem. Near Juijoto, in

Timor, five enemy fighters intercepted an Allied medium flight. One fighter was

damaged.

Reports from the Navy Department in Washington disclosed that on Jan. 19 an

air-striking group of U.S. planes .bombed

Jap positions at Munda, New Georgia Island. Results were not reported.

On Jan. 20 during the early morning Flying Fortresses and heavy bombers

scored one bomb hit on a Japanese destroyer off Cape Friendship at the most

easterly point of Bougainville island

MOSCOW, Jan. 21 (AP)—The Red Army's six major-scale offensives have

not slackened anywhere along the vast front, and although there was no specific

news today from the Leningrad-Volkhov sector, gains of from 10 to 20 miles and

a considerable penetration of the Ukraine supported the theory that the tempo of

the Soviet rushes was increasing rather than slowing dawn, despite the fact that

the Russians at some places were battling in deep defenses with reinforced troops.

Final collapse of Premier Benito Mussolini's African empire

appeared to be only a matter of hours today amid signs

that Field Marshal Erwin Rommel was hastily abandoning

the burning city of Tripoli and British eighth army columns

stormed forward within 35 miles of the axis stronghold.

Tripoli is the last citadel of Italy's dark continent domain

which once embraced Eritrea, Italian Somaliland, Abyssinia,

Cirenaica and Tripolitania. A bulletin from Gen. Sir Bernard

L. Montgomery's eighth army headquarters said British troops yesterday

captured the towns of Tarhuna and Homs, respectively 40 to 56

miles from Tripoli, and continued their pursuit of Rommel's fleeing

armies.

MOSCOW, Jan. 21 (AP)—Russian shock troops were reporting pouring

westward across the Manych river today 15 miles from the rail

junction of Salsk in the drive to isolate the axis army of the Caucasus

and clamp an arc of steel about Rostov.

Feverish German efforts to fix a stable line along the left bank of

the Manych, a placid, lake-fed stream which flows into the Don

30 miles east of Rostov, are failing, field dispatches said.

Red Star announced that Soviet detachments were capturing point

after point while the Germans were blowing up bridges and trying to

lay more mines in a rapid retreat. They already have been driven

from a number of positions on the Salsk side of the Manych, it said.

Russia's armies were reported storming forward today within 79

miles of Kharkov, the "Pittsburgh ni the Ukraine," while on the North

African front the British 8th Army was swiftly closing in on Homs and

Tarhuna. respectively 56 and 40 miles from the big Axis stronghold

at Tripoli.

A Cairo broadcast said British vanguards were only 30 miles from

Tripoli, last citadel in Premier Mussolini's African empire, in pursuit of

Nazi Field Marshal Erwin Rommel's fleeing columns.

At the same time, the Berlin radio said British parachutists were being

dropped behind Rommel's lines to harass communications.

Coinciding with these developments, German war planes attacked

London shortly afternoon today in the biggest daylight raid in two

years, bombing at least two districts in the capital and machine-gunning

streets during the lunch hour. 'Other bombs fell south of the city.

Preliminary reports indicated that at least 11 Nazi planes were destroyed

by RAF fighters alone. The raiders attacked under cover of 50

to 100 fighters who patrolled the channel.

It was London's first daylight alarm in three months. A school was

smashed and set aflame, and rescue workers dug many bodies from the

wreckage. Others were believed killed or trapped alive in debris.

Twenty-four persons were known to have been killed in London.

On the North African front, Allied fortunes fluctuated, with the British

racing ahead in Libya while the Axis scored gains in Tunisia.

Britain's Eighth army stormed on toward Tripoli, less than 50

miles away today, and dispatches from Algeria said that.

|Marshal Erwin Rommel, deciding to abandon all of Tripolitania, had

fled to Medenihe, 68 miles inside Tunisia.

The Eighth army's northern army swept through' Misurata, the

big German base for the Wad I Zem Zem defense line, and yesterday

were at Zliten, on the coast, 82 miles from Tripoli, a middle eastern

command communique said..

MOSCOW, Jan. 19,—(U.P)—Soviet troops pounded a vulnerable

German salient outside Leningrad today arid threatened to

isolate the axis armies on the northern front or,force them,into a

general retreat, front dispatches indicated.

The northern axis salient starts near Novgorod, 80 miles

south-of Leningrad. It already had lost its northern anchor at the

fortress of Schlusselburg, 25 miles east of Leningrad, which was

taken when the Red army lifted the siege on the former czarist

capital. '

Successful operations along 'this salient could become a

springboard for a Russian thrusts into the Baltcs and perhaps a

drive into East Prussia and Poland, observers said.

JAP SHIPS IN PACIFIC

WASHINGTON, Jan. 19.—(U.P)—United Slates submarines,

striking at enemy shipping in the Pacific and Far East areas,

have sunk five more enemy ships and damaged two others, the

navy announced today.

Ships sunk included:

One destroyer.

One large cargo ship.

One medium sized transport.

One small patrol vessel.

LON'DON, Jan. J6 (UP).—Germany, fearing both Allied

invasion of the continent and internal crack-up in occupied

countries, is ..building defenses frantically and resorting to

mass arrests in Poland, Norway and France, according to

reports reaching London today.

The Norwegian government in exile reported that the Germans

were engaged in "feverish efforts" to strengthen defenses

on the Norwegian coast,

Deputy Prime Minister Stanislaw Mitolajczyk of Poland

Pocket Tightens Near Stalingrad

MOSCOW, Jan, 17 {Sunday) (UP).—Soviet troops threatened

today to annihilate all Axis troops encircled west of Stalingrad, where

the pocketed gar-rison has been, reduced by 120,000.or more men,

A special Soviet ^communique,

disclosed that the German commander of the garrison had refused

a Russian ultimatum for it's surrender. The encircled troops

once were estimated at 200,000 to 220,000 men, the communique said,

but now- number between 70,000 and 80,000.

WASHINGTON*, Jan. 16 (UP)

— An indication of impending large-scale action in the Solom

mons area was seen tonight in the navy's disclosure that on

Friday U. S, planes operating in those islands shot down 30 Japanese

aircraft, damaged three destroyers and left a cargo ship

burning after scoring two direct hits on it.

British troops have beaten off a determined Japanese counterattack

near Rathdaung, 25 miles north of Akyab, Burma, while

Royal Air Force planes battered enemy positions in the Akyan

area, a British communique reported today

Th communique disclosed that Feild Marshal Sir Archibald Percival

Wavel's British/Indian troops had attacked by the Japanese near Rathdaung

Thursday night.
