MOSCOW, Jan. 6—(AP) — The German army was reported in full
retreat. In the Caucasus today, blowing up bridges and mining
rails in a desperate effort to check the' surging advance of Russian forces
driving hard at its heels.Red Star, organ of the Soviet
army, said Russian forces, which literally bad stormed and won the

GEN. MACARTHUR'S HEADQUARTERS, Australia, Jan. 6—
(UP)—Allied planes, in a shattering blow at a new Japanese invasion
fleet, have sunk nine and probably 10 ships, totaling more
than 50,000 tons, at Rabaul, in New Britain Island, it was announced today.
Striking at a moment when Australia was fearful of a major Japanese offensive, possibly even, against this continent. Gen. Douglas MacArthur's giant Consolidated
Liberator and Boeing Flying Fortress bombers attacked the
Japanese fleet concentration in two waves. They planted 1.000 pound bombs.
WASHINGTON, Jan. 6 —
(INS)—The Navy reported today that a U. S. task force of
warships had '"successfully bombarded" the Japanese air
feld at Munda on New Georgia island yesterday while American planes carried out a series of daring raids which may have sunk or damaged a Jap cruiser and transport.

Dr. G. W. Carver Developed 400 Uses For Peanuts And Sweet Potatoes
TUSKEGEE, Ala., Jan. 6—
President Roosevelt, Henry Ford and noted scientists were informed
of Dr. Carver's death at Tuskegee institute last night. He had been
in ill health for several months. Born in slavery at Diamond
Grove. Mo.. Dr. Carver himself did not know his exact age- All available
records indicate be was born in 1861.
