U.S. Troops Have Advanced to

The East on Guadalcanal Island

Washington, Nov. 7. UP^-The navy reported today that American

troops had advanced to the eastward of their positions on Guadalcanal

island in the Solomons in what appeared to be a maneuver, to isolate

a threatened Japanese beachhead in the vicinity of Koli point.

The advance was carried out*-

against only light enemy resist-

ance, a communique said, while .on

the western flank of the American

defense area in Guadalcanal, marines

again repulsed enemy counter-

attacks.

The communique also reported

that for the first time since October

29, enemy bombers had struck

at Guadalcanal but had failed to

do any damage altho clouds prevented

American fighters from engaffing

them.

axis attempt to rally and

More than two-thirds of the total

axis forces of 140.000 troops

were said to have been eliminated

from the battle, with the British

in swift pursuit of the broken enemy.

CAIRO, Nov. 6.—Three fast armored divisions of the Brit-

ish Eighth Army, led by Lieut. Gen. Bernard L. Montgomery,

have driven two wedges through Marshal Rommel's forces

and are fighting inside enemy positions.

The Axis high commands conceded the Allied offensive

was nearing Matruh, 104 miles west of the old El Alamein

battle line, but the British said officially only that the battle

catching an acute stage, spurred by

reports of a huge concentration of

naval strength, transports and

planes at Gibraltar and the growing

magnitude of the British victory

A Stockholm report from Madrid

said that "vast quantities of tanks

and planes" have been massed at

Gibraltar, presumably for the intention

of "opening a second front

in Europe with Gibraltar as the

base"

D.N.B. reported today that a large

Allied convoy, accompanied by several

large aircraft carriers and other

warships, left Gibraltar and sailed

into the Mediterranean last night.

"It appears the British are repeat-

ing their attempts to supply Malta

in grand style," the agency said.

The worst axis defeat of the war was shaping on the

sands of North Africa today.

With the British in swift pursuit, nazi Field Marshal

Erwin Rommel's broken armies were reported fleeing

westward across the Egyptian desert amid wild confusion,

and early unofficial estimates placed axis losses at 40,-

000 troops killed, wounded or captured.

Front-line dispatches said 9.000 axis prisoners had

been taken, including Gen. Ritter von Thoma. commander

of the German North Africa corps, and 260 tanks knocked

out of action.

KING SENDS MESSAGE

To the victorious British 8th army. King George VI .

sent a message declaring that the importance of their

feat "cannot be exaggerated."

Italian field headquarters tersely acknowledged that

German and Italian troops had withdrawn to new lines

after violent dawn-to-dusk tank battles yesterday, and

added:

WASHINGTON. (/P) — Persistent battering of the Japanese

in Egypt gives strong hope

that we are witnessing the beginning

of the not far distant

end to Hitler's hold on North

Africa.

The nazi all-highest also is

having visions of disaster for

Berlin claims a "remarkable

concentration" of British warships

and transports at Gibraltar.

The Vichy government is reported

to be holding conferences

about North Africa and from

rear Admiral Luetzow of the

German naval staff we get this:

'Casablanca, on French Morocco's

west coast, is a danger spot

far overshadowing Dakar. Africa

swarms with United States

agents whose gaze turns to

Casablanca."

Is Hitler conjuring up bug bears

to torture his sleep? He

will know in due course and

so shall we. Meantime, it is a

most comfortable feeling to see

him worry.

We must temper our natural

optimism with caution because

there is hard and bitter work, to

be done before the axis armies

are annihilated. That is the task

before us—the destruction of

Hitler's fighting machine in all

North Africa.

Once before we had our

dreams when Wavell drove defeated

enemy columns far to

the westward across the desert.

* *

But the axis still was strong

then and the allies weak. Indeed,

just at the crucial moment.

Wavell had to rush troops off to

the defense .of Greece, thereby

depriving him of a chance to follow

up his victory.

Now however, the Hitlerites

are weaker and the allies much

stronger. The nazi chief and his

minions are on the down grade.

Certainly the forces under

Gen. Sir Harold Alexander must

be jubilant as they pursue and

hammer what a British communique

described as the ''disordered

columns" of the enemy. When you

talk about "disordered columns" in.

retreat you are talking about a

"rout," which is one of the greatest

disasters that can befall an

army.

No wonder the- Fuehrer's boasted

intuition If making him see pink

elephants. As a matter of fact, It

looks as though his Intuition might

be on the right track this time.

ports late today said Marshal Erwin

carved deep gains today

into Democratic majorities in. both

chambers of Congress and on the

basis of yet incomplete returns from

Tuesday's election had a mathematical

House.

Democrats remained in the saddle

in the Senate, with 13 wins added

to 41 holdovers for a. working majority

of the 96 seats. But the Republicans,

in picking up at least

eight seats, vanquished such administration

stalwarts at Prentiss M.

Brown of Michigan and William H.

Smathers of New Jersey, and even

dipped down into the Oklahoma

cotton country to unseat Josh Lee,

all-out New Dealer.

Submarine Attack

ST. JOHN'S, Newfoundland, Nov.

4.—(AP)—An announcement by naval

authorities that a submarine attack

had been made against shipping in

Newfoundland coastal waters was

made public today.

The announcement, which disclosed

neither the time, place nor

result of the attack, was made Monday,

but not released until now.

(The German high command asserted

yesterday that U-boats had

sunk 16 ships totaling 94,000 tons

off the Canadian east coast out of

a convoy "on the way from the

United States to England."

(There was no confirmation of

this from any source, however, and

similar German claims have proved

.exaggerated in the past..)

forces, advancing steadily southeast of Nalchik, threatened

both Ordzhonikidze, gateway to the rich southern Caucasus

Grozny oil fields today.

Reports from the front said that

he Germans delivered 10 successive

attacks against one Russian

position southeast of Nalchik, sup-

--(INS)—Secretary of the Navy

Frank Knox reported today

that two additional Japanese

cruisers and one destroyer

probably were sunk in the nigh

naval battle on Oct. 11-12, but af

the same time warned against un-

due optimism '"due to our signal

success in the first round" of the

current Solomons battle.

At his weekly press conference

Knox told newspapermen that in

a discussion with Vice Admiral

Robert L. Ghormley, former com-

mander of American forces in the

Solomons, the admiral revealed

that a total of five destroyers and

three enemy cruisers probably were

sunk by American naval units off

Savo Island.

Britain's 8th army, continuing its

methodical, sledgehammer offensive,

has jolted the Axis loose from

another section of tenaciously-held

positions in the flinty corridor between

Moreover it is holding its gains

in the face of violent counter-attacks

by Marshal Erwin Rommel's

forces, it was announced today.

With hundreds of roaring guns

Western Egyptian desert, consoli-

dated its newly won positions and

help of American planes.

(The German radio said the Brit-

ish resumed the attack early today

wheeling up reinforcements, especially

artillery and tanks. The assertions

by D.N.B. came only 12 hours

after the Nazis had claimed that the

offensive had collapsed.)
