Fourth U.S. Carrier Lost In South Pacific;
Yanks Sink Cruiser, Damage 4 Jap Ships
M'Arthur Fliers Renew Raids;
Most of American Crew Saved

After Fatal Damage in Enemy Attack off Santa Crux Isles, North of Solomons
WASHINGTON, Oct. 31.-(AP)-Sinking of another US.
aircraft carrier-the fourth-in the furious air and sea battle
for control of the South Pacific, was announced by the Navy
tonight leaving only three American carriers known be
still in action,
The latest victim of two Japanese aerial attacks was not
identified by the Navy. She went down near the Santa Cruz
Islands, a tiny spot in the Pacific
about 250 miles northeast
of Guadalcanal in the same
battle which cost the U.S. fleet
the destroyer Porter last Sunday
night.

(Sunday)-(AP)_Allied bombers striking for the third
successive day at Japanese shipping in the Solomon
and New Britain sank a heavy cruiser, severely damaged a
light cruiser and scored direct hits on at least three merchant
vessels, a communique said today Jnercnani
Most of the damage in the the latest raids was done at Buin,
n the Solomons, but 21 tons of explosives were dropped on
harbor of Rabaul, New Britian where the results
could not be fully observed because of low clouds
The Allies did not lose a plane in either raid.

German bombers smashed with
bombs and machine guns at Southeastern
England today in the biggest
Nazi attack since the 1940 battle of
Britain. concentrating their assault
on shopper-crowded streets at Canterbury,
where Mrs. Franklin D.
Roosevelt was a visitor only yesterday.

CAIRO, Oct. 31.— (AP)— The British
Eighth Army methodically whittled
down German strength today in the
Western Egyptian desert, consoli-
dated its newly won positions and
repulsed counter - attacks w h i 1 e
maintaining air supremacy with the
help of American planes.
(The German radio said the Brit-
ish resumed the attack early today
wheeling up reinforcements, especially
artillery and tanks. The assertions
by D.N.B. came only 12 hours
after the Nazis had claimed that the
offensive had collapsed.)
