U. S Loses 5 Transports in African Landing
SINK 6 AXIS SHIPS IN CONVOY
British Plane Carrier,
3 Destroyers Also Sunk
WASHINGTON', Dec. 3 W-The navy, department announced
today hat five United States naval Transports lost1, during the
occupation of North Africa by United State forces.
Three other transports, one destroyer, and one tanker were
damaged during the operation.
A navy spokesman said casualties were very small.
The transports sunk were listed In the communique as the
Tasker II. Bliss, the Hugh L. Scott and the. Edward Rutledge which
were sunk off Casa Blanca.; the Joseph Hews, sunk off llabal and
the Leedstown, sunk off Algiers.
The communique said the n«l of kin of personnel killed, wounded,
or missing were being notified by telegraph.
The names of the damaged vessels were not disclosed.

Japs Lose 9 Ships in
New Guadalcanal Battle
WASHINGTON Dec.3 (AP)—Smashing a Japanese
attempt to land reinforcements' on Guadalcanal island the
United States naval vessels sent nine enemy ships
to the bottom in a sharp night battle north of island, the navy
announced today.
