little more than a mile of. the city limits a front dispatch reported, adding
that the fall of the city was considered imminent.

American shock troops broke
through the outer German . defenses of Cherbourg today and drove within a
little more than a mile of. the city limits a front dispatch reported, adding
that the fall of the city was considered imminent.
One Infantry unit attacking from
the south reached heights overlooking
Cherbourg with only slight enemy
resistance.
The German defenses were
undergoing a saturation bombing at 8 a. m., creating a virtual earthquake.
German troops were surrendering by
the hundreds, and duringthe night they offered little artillery and small arms
fire to impede the American advance lo the heights.

escape railways radiating from Vitebsk were cut yesterday in the first 24 hours
of the offensive, which carried through powerful
fortifications both northwest ami
southeast of the city and liberated more than 150 towns and villages.

Sims in the Manipur hills when they re-opened land communications yesterday
between Imphal and Kohimo,
Lt. Gen. Stilwell's Chinese Chinese
troops driving down the Hukang and
Mogaung valleys, seized a 150-mm rifle,
believed to be the last of the Jap big guns In northern Burma. Two others were
captured by the Chinese last week.
