Red Clay Road
Into Valmontone
Stained By Blood
Men of Both Sides
Fall Before Artillery,
Machine Gun Fire
By JAMES E. ROPER
Valmontone, Italy, June 2 (UP) —
The red clay road into Valmontone was stained black today with the blood of German and American soldiers. It was significant of the battle in which the Americans smashed Hermann Goering troops to take this city. The black splotches on the red clay were from the men of both sides who fell before the American artillery and German machine gun fire.
Along the roadside lay wrecked German tanks and guns, together with ammunition and soldiers' gear. At the outskirts of the town were sprawled several dead Germans, their bodies dotted with swarms of green flies which hummed over their wounds in the warm sun.
On highway six, just east of Valmontone, there was a heap of German bodies. They had tried to enter the town early today. But as the three trucks of German infantry neared the town. American troops who already had cut the highway, mowed them down with antitank guns.

virtually unlimited scale.
The initial such attack was completed yesterday when scores of Flying Fortresses, with an escort of American Mustang and Soviet Yak fighters, landed at newly-completed bases "somewhere in Russia" after raiding Romanian targets selected by the Russian command.

If Germans Abandon City
London, June 3 (UP)—
The allies announced today that Rome would be spared the ravages of war unless the Germans elected to defend the city itself, which Berlin implied would not be done.
General Sir Henry Maitland Wilson, allied commander in the Mediterranean, said the allies were interested "solely in the destruction and elimination of German forces" in Italy and expressed hope that the enemy would not make the "ill-considered choice" of defending Rome,
