Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox today explained the reduced number of U-boat attacksin the At l a n t ic as probably being due to  w i t h d r a w al of the subs for refitting w i th  addi t ional  a n t i - a i r c r a ft weapons. He said  t h at the recent  lull in assaults on convoys may be a prelude to new "fight-it-out" tactics by the Germans.

S t r i k i ng in force early  y e s t e r d ay morning. Fortresses bombed the  L u f t w a f fe  repair  p l a nt and airfield at Brussels-Evere in Belgium and  i n s t a l l a t i o ns near St. Omer, in France.

Fr iday, are meeting very  l i t t le resistance except for mines, demolition and the n a t u r al obstacles of  the rugged  c o u n t ry  t h r o u gh wh i ch  they  a re mo v i n g. Tanks have been landed and other supplies are
being  b r o u g ht  in across the  S t r a i ts of Me s s ina, whi ch are controlled completely
by the  .Al l i ed  navy.

WASHINGTON, Sept. 7—

A d m i t t i ng  t h at such tactics already hadcurbed the usefulness of blimps in the A t l a n t i c, he added  that they also would c r i mp any potential value of helicopters a g a i n st submarines.
                                         90 Subs Sunk in 3 Months
WASHINGTON, Sept. 7—
The Navy Department disclosed today  t h at more t h an 90 U-boats were sunk in May,  J u ne and July. Twenty-nine were destroyed by American forces.
