WASHINGTON, Sept. 7—
Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox today explained the reduced number of U-boat attacksin the At l a n t ic as probably being due to w i t h d r a w al of the subs for refitting w i th addi t ional a n t i - a i r c r a ft weapons. He said t h at the recent lull in assaults on convoys may be a prelude to new "fight-it-out" tactics by the Germans.
A d m i t t i ng t h at such tactics already hadcurbed the usefulness of blimps in the A t l a n t i c, he added that they also would c r i mp any potential value of helicopters a g a i n st submarines.
90 Subs Sunk in 3 Months
WASHINGTON, Sept. 7—
The Navy Department disclosed today t h at more t h an 90 U-boats were sunk in May, J u ne and July. Twenty-nine were destroyed by American forces.
