                       PORTSMOUTH, N. H;, SATURDAY, EVENING, JANUARY 22, 1944
(By the Associated Press)
American and British fifth army troops in a sea-borne hop deep behind the Nazi lines . punched ashore at dawn today on the Italian west coast in a bold thrust to turn the German flank and speed the drive upon
Rome. The moonlight landing under support of heavy1 air and naval bombardment was timed with a powerful frontal assault crunching into enemy defenses from the Minturno and Cassino areas.
A special Allied communique did not locate the new landing, greatest amphibious operation in Italy since the September landings at Salerno, but declared it was "deep in the rear of the present enemy front line
position."
                                                     'Satisfactory Development'
The beachhead extends "several miles from north to south," it added. "The situation is developing satisfactorily."

To Humiliate Internees

(This is the second of two articles about Mrs. Frederick S. Pray of Berwick, Me^, who returned
on the Gripsholm.—Editor's Note).
By-MARION CHASE PIKE
"The Japanese commandant at our internment camp was particularly nasty and missed
no opportunity to humiliate us,"
Mrs. Frederick S. Pray of Berwick declared, as she told of her six-month internment in a
Japanese camp at Shanghai, China.
Take inspection, for instance. Morning and then again at night camp he would have us-line up in. forma- '
tion, stand at attention and count off one-two-three-four-five. It-was a stupid regulation. Even he must
have realized it because after a while evening inspections were discontinued."
Mrs. Pray, who returned on the Gripsholm, recalled the commandant's reaction when 'one of the
internees smuggled a letter out in a loaf of bread. He was furious, she said, and prepared to 'teach them a
lesson. No washing of any kind for two days.
"If he expected.us to break down  and cry about it. he was mistaken. We just went dirty and laughed at
them. Which, of course, annoyed the commandant even more."
