MOSCOW, Sept. 5.—(AP)—Showing an amazing power of

recuperation, the Red Army was reported today to have

shaken off trip-hammer blows at Stalingrad and stopped the

German advance upon that Volga River industrial center.

In the Caucasus, also, military advices said, the Russians

were checking the German progress, and in the central

eastern sectors were counter

attacking.

CAIRO, Sept. (APP—The British

Eighth Army held firmly to new won

positions on the central sector

of the El Alamein front after

smashing three heavy Axis counterattacks

and military commentators

here declared that the first week

of the renewed battle for Egypt

had ended in limited victory for

Allied arms.

LONDON; Sept. '5— (AP)—American

light and heavy bombers made

two attacks on targets in occupied

France today, it was announced off-

icially. All the American bombers

returned safely but six Allied

fighters were missing.

LONDON, Sept. 3.—(U.W—Russian

planes, penetrating to the heart of

Central Europe, bombed Vienna and

Budapest last night and a force of

British 'planes estimated at 200, left

many fires raging in Germany's

port, submarine building center and

war factory area of Bremen.

Aerial warfare raged on a grand

scale, unprecedented in the war,

over an 800-mile front from London,

which had a brief resultless daylight

air raid alarm today, to the

capitals of Austria and Hungary..

SOMEWHERE IN AUSTRALIA,

Sept. 5.— (U.P)—-Japan, seeking to

strengthen its position in the zone

northwest of Australia, has occupied

several islands in the Lesser Sunda

group extending westward from

Netherlands-Portuguese Timor, it

was revealed today.
