Current Events December 15, 1943;

THIS WAS REPORTED TODAY DECEMBER 15, 1943:
The Red army captured Cherkassy, the last major German middle Dnieper stronghold, yesterday after killing 6000 Nazis in a ferocious battle, but was forced to retreat from the road junction of Hado-;nrysl 55 miles west of Kiev, before a renewed enemy offensive.
 
American forces in the Ramu valley on New Guinea repelled three strong Jap attacks before dawn
with heavy losses to the enemy. Gen. Douglas MacArthur's communique revealed today.
 The Japs launched their predawn attacks against our forward elements in the Kesawai area, but were beaten off leaving many dead behind.

: MOSCOW. Dec. I5.—(Wednesday)—(INS)—
The Red army captured Cherkassy, the last major German middle Dnieper stronghold, yesterday after killing 6000 Nazis in a ferocious battle, but was forced to retreat from the road junction of Hado-;nrysl 55 miles west of Kiev, before a renewed enemy offensive.
Cherkassy, a vital river port100 miles below the lower edge formation alone was credited in a
 fell ; at dawn to a combined frontal and flanking assault by 22 soviet units ranging from battalions up to divisions and including an airborne"'division which -had landed on strips hacked in a forest by guerillas.
Several hours later, the Russian forces due west of Kiev were compelled to abandon Radomysl on sTeterev tributary 15 miles south west bank of the Dnieper's  of Malin after having held an all out German tank and
infantry assault for three days.

 ALLIED HEADQUARTERS, Southwest Pacific, Dec. 15.——(WEDNESDAY)—(INS)—
American forces in the Ramu valley on New Guinea repelled three strong Jap attacks before dawn

Meanwhile ground forces on the Huon Peninsula closed in on the Jap supply base at Lakona. Concentrated aerial activity over New Guinea saw American attack plancs strafing enemy positions at
Daumoina. Yaula, and Kwato in the Kesawai area and along the coast west of Pommern Bay.
Aerial patrols in a coastal sweep from Saidor to Fortification Point strafed and wrecked ten enemy
barges.
Light naval units accounted for 12 more Jap barges during the night, sinking three near the mouth of the Sanga river and nine more off Reiss Point.
