(The German high command, reporting the heaviest fighting in the center, at Ponlccorvo and to the southwest, acknowledged a "local dent" in the Hitler line at
Sanf Oliva but said it was "sealed off." This indicated a Frenchdriven wedge toward the mountain only some four miles from Pico, on the inland road from threatenedItri.)

Formia, Italy, May 19(AP)—
Retreating Nazis threw all the fire power they had against onrushing Americans who captured Formia—a Tyrrhenian seaport believed to be the coastal anchor of the Adolf Hitler- line — but they could not even slow the doughboys down.
Germans loaded the route with obstacles from Scauri, three and a half miles to the east, all the way along, coastal highway No. 7 to the westernmost corner of Formia.
There were fortified pillboxes, deep dugouts, mines by the hundreds on land and in the waters off shore and snipers spitting death from every house. To keep things
hopping, long range artillery crunched in from the powerhouse at Gaeta .every little while, covering every yard. Gaeta is getting it back from our' guns now.
