The Rumanian general staff was reported to have ordered immediate mobilization of the nation's manpower for "urgent" military service today, amid increasing signs that Germany had seized complete control of the country in a desperate effort to halt the onrushing Red Army short of the Ploesti oil fields.

NEW DELHI, March 25. (UP) —

Japanese invasion f o r c e s have driven deeper into India, Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatton's headquarters announced today, hut in northern Burma, American and Chinese troops outflanked the enemy in the upper Mogaung valley, capturing a town only 58 miles from the rail and supply center of Myitkyina. A Southeast Asia Command communique disclosed t h a t  a "strong" Japanese column had pushed more than 15 miles frm the Manlpur state border In the Somra hills tract area and that heavy Hunting was In process south of Ukhrul, 31 miles northeast of Intphnl, apparent objective, of the multi-pronged Japanese drive.

One Japanese raiding unit in that area drove even closer to the Manlpur Capitnl on Thursday but withdrew after an unsuccessful attack, while another small enemy detachment northeast of Imphal was moppod up by British Imperial troops.

Others Dislodged

In the Kabw valley sector, southeast of Imphal, the Japanese advanced from the south on the Tamu-Palol road, the main route from the cast into the Manipur valley, but other enemy troops north of the road were dislodged from a newly-won position. The invaders also carried out ineffective raids along the road.

Battle-wearied New Zealand Infantrymen charged again and again In a vain effort to dislodge the German Green Devil paratroopers from the row of gutted stone houses they held along the southern and western end of the town.

Roper reported from the front, however, that the fighting appears-to have become stalemated and that additional Nazi reinforcements were believed piling into Cassino through a rabbit-warren of underground passages connecting to their strongpoints outside the town.

The Rumanian general staff was reported to have ordered immediate mobilization of the nation's manpower for "urgent" military service today, amid increasing signs that Germany had seized complete control of the country in a desperate effort to halt the onrushing Red Army short of the Ploesti oil fields.

London observers believed the German high command was struggling to establish a battle line along the lower reaches of the Prut or Danube in southeastern Rumania to protect the vital Ploesti oil fields on which the German military machine is dependent.

These sources predicted that the Germans and their Rumanian satellites would fight every foot of the way to prevent, the Russians from breaking into the Ploesti fields, which lie just s o u t h of the mountain passes leading through the Transylvanian Alps into central Rumania and the broad Hungarian plain.

NAPLES.—(U.P) —

German reinforcement have entered Cassino through a series of ancient tunnels, it was disclosed today, bolstering nazi forces that already have r e captured o n c - q u n r t r r of t h e ruined town

Enemy troops now occupy a belt several houses thick running from the southern extremities of the town all t h e w a y past Highway 6 into northern Cassino. To  w i t h in about 250 yards of a well which marked the most advanced point which Allied Fifth army troops had reached before the b ig a ir bombardment of March 15. United Press War Correspondent James E Roper reported in a front' d i s patch.

"Heavy fighting continues in Cassino where the general situation remains unchanged." The communique said.

Tunnels Under Town.

Three tunnels dug under the town in t h e fifth century—in connection with searches for buried treasure, according to local tales—enabled the Germans to move their troops in from one strongpoint to another, a headquarters spokesman said. In recent years the tunnels had been used as w i ne cellars.

Fortresses and Liberators ranged across western and central Germany

yesterday, pounding industrial plants, railway junctions and airfields in the

wake of the RAF's greatest bombing assault of the war—a 3,300-ton blow

at Frankfurt Wednesday night.

As the American heavies and their fighter escorts picked out their targets

in good weather, the Luftwaffe showed signs of coming up to fight again,

and some U.S. formations fought oil short but bitter assaults by as many

as 50 enemy planes.

The daylight offensive—supplemented by morning and afternoon

Marauder raids in the occupied countries—carried the LkSSTAF to 18missions this month, equal to the recordscore of February. It also was the 13thattack of the irsonih on the Reich itself.

Twenty-seven bombers and six lighters were reported missing from a force which included between 500 and 750 bombers and something less than 1,000 P47s, P51s and P3Ss of the Eighth and Ninth Air Forces. Twenty enemy planes were destroyed by the fighters; bomber claims had not been compiled late last night.

Several Targets Hit

Railroad yards at Hamm, a war factory at Munster and Luftwaffe bases at Achmer and Handorf were bombed in good visibility, and. crews reported direct hits. Industrial targets at the Messe:-

schmitt production center of Brunswick were attacked through clouds, the eighth assault since Jan. 1 on that area.

WASHINGTON, Mar. 23 (Reuter)

•—American planes shot down 235 German aircraft over Germany during the last week, Henry L. Siimson Secretary' of War, said today. American bombers lost totaled 85 and fighters 48.

American planes operating from Italy destroyed during the same period 112 German planes in the air, besides ~a number on the ground.

Allied losses in Italy were 45 planes. "Allied air operations over Germany are certainly making inroads on the strength of the German air force." said Mr. Stimson.

A. Soviet breakthrough tbat rolled back the Nazi lines 25 to 35 miles south  of the T.arnopol- Proskurov sector along the Polish border was announced in last night's communique.
