SEATTLE, Aug. 5.—(/P)_
Still s u f f e r i n g from the effect
of drifting three days and
nights on a raft in the rain and
fog of the north Pacific, seven
more survivors of an American
freighter shelled and sunk
by a Japanese submarine' last
month arrived here today.
The men, among them Captain
Christian Evensen of San
Francisco, the vessel's master,
gave more details of the shelling
and machine-gunning of
the survivors as they put out
in life rafts and a lifeboat. Two ,
sailors died from shell wounds
and six others from exposure
before rescue came.
The ship was attacked the night
of July 14, survivors said in interviews
approved by tile navy and
released last night.
Survivors Listed
'Hie men arriving today with
Captain Evensen were Isak Arnescn,
Ssn Francisco, able seaman,
who was sent to the Marine hospital
for treatment, for shock and
exposure, Frank Purviance. Richmond,
Calif, steward; George
Croff, Great Palls, Mont, able
seaman; Peter Kalani, Hawaii, fireman;
B. J, O'Brien, Portland, oiler,
and Hans Wange, San Pedro, second
officer.
It was the fourth attack by a
Japanese submarine since June 7,
when a freighter was sunk in north
Pacific waters. A submarine also
shelled Astoria, Ore., and Point.
Estevan on Vancouver island
Survivors, who drifted eight days
in a lifeboat in the choppy waters
of the north Pacific, Were landed
here. They said the submarine machine-
gunned their lifeboat after
they had abandoned ship under
terrific shell fire.
The dead were Anthony Amundsen,
chief engineer; Bernard Rodman,
seaman, San Diego: Rudolph
Peterson, seaman; Emil Nilsson, seaman.
Seattle; Lloyd Carlson, seaman,
Seattle; Martin Knudsen. seaman.
San Francisco; Thomas p.
Ware, seaman; Alexander Heitnor
missing and believed dead.
