WASHINGTON, NOT, 16.—(TP)-The name of the Solomon Islands was added today to the
list of American fleet and air victories over the Japanese in the Pacific.
An extraordinary navy communique issued at 5 PM today disclosed that American forces
in the South Pacific had sunk 23 Japanese ships and damaged seven others in a three-day
series of naval and air engagements.
Later, from his headquarters at Pearl Harbor, Pacific Fleet Commander Nimitz declared
that the most powerful Japanese attempt to retake the whole of the Solomon archipelago
was crushed by what he called "the aggressive action of Vice Admiral Halsey and his forces/'
American losses in the battle were listed as two unidentified light cruisers
and six destroyers sunk;
Japanese ships sunk included one battleship, three heavy cruisers, two
light cruisers, five destroyers, eight troop transports and four cargo transports*
A battleship of the Kongo class was damaged as were six destroyers.
The navy bulletin said that Jap naval forces approached the southeastern
Solomons from the north, while other units moved southeastward toward Gua-
dalcanal from Rabaul and Buin. where the enemy had massed expeditionary
forces.

Slates army have reinforced the British First Army on the
east spearheading the British drive into Tunisia. French
military unit* also have joined the Americans.
