Capt. Allen V, Martini of San Francisco, former San Mateo
Junior college student, participated in yesterday's daylight
assault. by American Flying fortresses on the dock areas of
Rotterdam, Holland, and railroad yards of Hamm in Western
Germany, and his Fortress, the 'Dry Martini," claimed two
enemy fighter planes during the raid, today's press dispatches from
London announced.

March 5—(UP)—Allied Flying Fortresses and Billy Mitchell
medium bombers roared over the northeast New Guinea coast
today, complete masters of sea and skies, relentlessly seeking the
few survivors The vacant quietness of the Hiion gulf area bore
testimony to the savage completeness of their destruction of a
huge 22-ship enemy convoy.
Today there was no threat of Japanese assault and no Japanese
ships remained on the surface—the last two wounded destroyers
were sunk by the bombers Thursday morning.

Soviets Now 37 MilesWest of City; Olenino Captured
MOSCOW, March 5.—(U.P.)—
Soviet tanks and infantry raced on through 53 more towns and
villages south and southwest of Rzhev today, crushing- all opposition
in a fast-breaking drive on the big German base at Smolensk.
Bother Russian armies, everywhere on the offensive, pounded
forward on key sectors all along a 900-mile stretch of the Soviet
front from Lake Ilmen to the Northwest Caucasus.
West of Rzhev
One town and 10 villages captured by the Soviets on the Rzhev
front were south -of Oleaiino, 37 miles west of Rzhev on the railroad
to Velikie Luki, the Russian midday communique said. Olenino
fell to the Soviets yesterday.
The other 42 inhabited places were located by the communique as
merely in the general area south and southwest of Rzhev. Great
quantities of war material and many prisoners were captured.
"Many counter-attacks were repulsed with heavy losses for the
Germans," the bulletin said.

Chinese generalissimo, called upon
the United States today to send an
expeditionary force to China to
show that America means business.
Mme. Chiang answered any and
all questions at a press conference
in the Waldorf Astoria hotel, but
She said she had come to the
United States for medical treatment
and not on a mission.
