BOMB BAZED PANTELLERIA CAPITULATES
Tiny Island Gives
Up After Days of
Incessant Assault
An Advanced U. S. Fighter Base, North Africa— (AP)—
Speedy American Lightning fighters broke up an attempt by
from 50 to 60 German dive-bombers to smash British forces
landing on Pantelleria after the garrison of the Italian island
surrendered today.
One hour after the bomb-dazed Italians, their water supply
exhausted, displayed the white tokens of unconditional
surrender as demanded by Lieut. Gen. Carl A. Spaatz in a
recent letter to the governor, the Nazi squadrons struck at
British naval craft pouring thousands of soldiers and numbers
of tanks onto the island.
The German warplanes suddenly roared in through the
rain which fell throughout the operation on the great mass
of men and ships on the sea below.
The Lightnings simultaneously swarmed in and forced the
enemy aircraft to get rid of their bombs haphazardly in
order to keep from being destroyed.
Allied Headquarters in North Africa —(AP)— Aerial bom-
bardment of the greatest fury the world had ever known compelled
the little island fortress of Pantelleria to surrender unconditionally
today, but British troops landing under the cover of naval
guns had to fight 22 minutes against scattered enemy defenders.
The strategic stepping stone, some CO miles from Sicily and 45 from
Africa, was occupied at 12:22 p.m (5:22 a.m. central war time) after
noon landing by assault forces 20 minutes after the display of
white flags on Pantelleria's hills and a white cross on its air field.

Surrender Is
Good News to
White House
Washington —( AP)
President Roosevelt declared today that the surrender of Pantelleria was very
good news and at the same time he appealed indirectly but strongly to
Italy to get out of the war.
He told a press conference that the united nations could assure the
Italian people the opportunity of choosing the kind of non-Nazi non-
Fascist government they want established after Fascism has been
put down, and the Germans have been driven from their territory.
It is the hope and intention of the United Nations, Mr. Roosevelt
said, that Italy be restored to nationhood and take her place as a respected
member of the European family of nations.

Chinese Make
Further Gains
Along Yangtze
(By the Associated Press)
Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek's triumphant armies were officially
credited today with new successes in fighting along the upper Yangtze
river front as Chinese troops stormed and captured a town northeast
of the main Japanese base of Ichang.
Dispatches said the Chinese occupied Wangchiachang after an all night
battle in which 300 Japanese
troops were killed.
Other Chinese columns broke into Yingshan, important J a p a n e s e
stronghold 90 miles northwest of Hankow, inflicting heavy casualties
in street fighting.

More Fire Bombs On
Pacific Timber, View
Eugene, Ore.—(AP)— Incendiary time bombs, carried inland by free
floating balloons of probable Japanese origin, were dropped on Oregon
forests last year, and, in the view of Lt. Col. James W. Fraser,
similar strategems of even more potentially serious effect may be expected
this fire season.
Colonel Fraser, member of an army party touring timber operations
in the Pacific northwest, told lumbermen of this area yesterday
that at some unpredictable zero hour a repetition of the balloon
bomb attacks likely will be accompanied by airplane bombing, submarine
shelling and sabotage.
Fraser said last year's balloons probably were released from submarines
and were timed to release their clusters of fire bombs after
they had been wafted over forested areas.
