On the Italian battleground the Fifth army repulsed a small German thrust on the left flank of the
Allied beachhead below Rome, Enemy patrols in the Cassino area were beaten back and there were artillery duels in the Adriatic sector and the Garigliano region.
An estimated 800 enemy planes were encountered on the Steyr raid and some of them .used rockets and aerial bombs. Anti-aircraft fireover the town was the most intense ever met by bombers from this theater, many crewmen said, and this plus the fighter attacks indicated the importance the Germans attached to the industrial establishments there.

Negroes Given

Texas Primary
Washington, April 2.—(AP)
The supreme court, reversing Its position of nine years ago, ruled today that Negroes have the right to vote in a Texas democratic primary to nominate candidates for congress. Justice Reed delivered the 8-1 decision, which was of far-reaching importance in those southern states where the choice at a primary is usually equivalent to election.
Justice Roberts dissented.
The majority opinion states that "the right to vote in such a primary for the nomination of candidates without discrimination by the state, like the right to vote in a general election, is a right secured by the constitution.
