Important Japanese Base, Is Bombed

U. S; Marines are holding and digging into positions
oh three of the Solomon Islands while American and Allied
naval forces fight a bitter .battle for control of the
waters about Tulagi.
The Navy, disclosed that much Wednesday night the
first definite. word in two days of our first offensive of the
war iii the Pacific.
The terse communique gave some hint of the, scope
importance of the task which has been tackled, by.
American land, sea and air forces, when it indicated that
the attackers found a Japanese base in the Tulagi area
well under way.
This included landing fields for shore-based aircraft,
which still are under attack by U. S. and Australian
bombers.

Thursday said Allied bombers
dealt a smashing blow against
four Japanese ships at Rabaul,
the strong Japanese New Britain
base whence, supplies have
been ferried to the Solomons.

punched another hole in
Russian positions astride the
Rostov-Baku railroad in the
Cherkessk area, but the Red

announced early Thursday.

WASHINGTON, Aug. 12
(AP)—The Slate Department
made it clear Wednesday
night that. American
armed forces in India would
not participate in the suppression
of internal disorders there.
They have, on the contrary,
been ordered to "exercise scrupulous
care to avoid the slightest
participation in' India's internal
political problems, or even the
appearance of so doing."
Purpose To Fight Axis
Their sole purpose in India,
Department said, is to prosecute
the war against the Axis powers,
and their primary aim in that
area is to help China.
