WASHINGTON, Aug. 8.—(AP)—Striking suddenly and savagely
at the north and south wings of Japan's advance into
the Pacific Ocean, the United States Navy is hammering at
enemy nests in the Solomon Islands off Australia and has
assaulted Nipponese invaders of Kiska Island in the Aleutians,
it was officially announced today.
Turning Point in War Seen;
Joint Action Hints Big
Offensive in Southern Seas
PEARL HARBOR, T.H., Aug. 8.—(AP)—United States
forces in the Southwest Pacific have launched offensive operations
in the Tulgia area of the Solomon Islands, which are
progressing favorably, a communique by Admiral Chester
W. Nimitz, Commander-in-chief of the United States Pacific
fleet, said today.
The communique, which indicated the possibility of a
turning point in the Pacific
war, also told of a United
States fleet task force attack
on the Japanese at Kiska, in
the Aleutian Islands.

Nehru, and Maulana
Abul Kalan Azad, president of
the All-India Congress party,
had been arrested in. Bombay.
