WASHINGTON, Oct. 3.—INS---
The Navy Department disclosed
tonight that a determined
counter-offensive is under way
against the Japanese in the
Aleutian, islands, and that army
troops have occupied positions
within 125 miles of the enemy
base at Kiska.
A communique said that army detachments,
supported by warships
have landed in the Andreanof group
of the Aleutians, and established
airfields within easy striking distance
of the Japanese forces.
Installations at Kiska island,
which the Japanese have held tot
four months, are now under attack'
from American bombing and fighter,
planes based in the Andreanof Is-
lands. .
In two air raids in 'the Kiska area
on Wednesday and Thursday, two.
more Japanese ships were bombed
and machine-gunned. One of these,
a transport, was set afire by bombs.
The enemy camp area at Kiska
also was bombed and several fires
were started.

GEN. DOUGLAS M'ARTHUR'S
HEADQUARTERS IN AUSTRALIA,
Oct. 3.—(INS)—Rugged Australian
troops, supported by American
bombers that wrecked the key
Wairopi bridge, drove ahead tonight
on the heels of retreating
Japanese to within five miles of
the heart of the gap through the
Owen Stanley mountains of New
Guinea.
Advancing over a jungle-clad
ridge 3,500 feet above sea level,
the Aussies were farcing their way
toward the northern slopes of the
massive Owen Stanley range in a
drive that has carired them some
(i5 miles along winding mountain
trails from the Allied base of Fort
Moresby.
In the week since the counterpush
began, the Australians have
encountered no major Japanese resistance
since the opening battle
that resulted in recapture of loribaiwa.
Strangely devoid of air
support while their own tenuous
communications are under incessant
Allied bombing and strafing,

LONDON, Oct. 3.—(INS)—A
powerful force of British bombers,
estimated to number at least 150,
was declared tonight to have
wrought flaming destruction amid
key German war factories in the
Rhineland last night.
Staged on the heels of Friday's
record daylight sweep over Nazioccupied
areas, in which American
Flying Fortresses blasted important
targets and shot down 13 Nazi
fighters without loss, the new RAF
attacks, said a communique, kindled
"many fires."
