   Masses Flee Bombed Nazi Cities
Big Planes Hit
Steel and Coal
Center in Ruhr
Germany's home front shook under a violent new storm of
bombs before dawn today—the fourth night assault in a row—as
RAF heavyweights blasted a fiery trail of havoc among nazi war
foundries in the Ruhr.
A British air ministry communique said the Ruhr attack fell
upon Oberhausen (pop. 110,000) in important steel and coal center
on the Rhine. 35 miles north of Cologne.
Meanwhile. German newspapers received at Bern. Switzerland,
said a mass evacuation of cities in western Germany was under
way as thc result of 180 heavy raids by Allied planes and 600 air
alarms.
Ask Homes Opened.
The nazi press is engaged in a campaign to impel rural residents
to open their homes to refugees. Comfort must bow to the demands
of necessity." Hitler's own newspaper. Voelkischcr Beobachter.
said in urging everyone to crowd refugees into available rooms.
Much-bombed Duesseldorf, target
of a recent 2.000-ton RAF raid, is one of the chief cities being
evacuated, the German papers said.
Not only the bombed-out families but those yet untouched by
the explosives are being moved out. Das Reich said. Men are left
behind to work.
A German war reporter in a Berlin radio broadcast gave an in-
dication today of the tremendous damage wrought by Allied bombs
in thc Ruhr and Rhineland with these words:
"Even soldiers from the eastern front pass these towns in silence
bow to the unimaginable suffertngs and sacrifices of these
people," he said.
Plan Is Announced.

Rome Reports Naval-Air Battle/
Blockbusters Hit Sicilian Port

Enemy broadcasts again asserted today that Allied warships and
transports were massing in the Sicilian straits, ostensibly prepar-
ing for the grand assault on southern Europe, and declared the fleet
was under heavy attack by axis warplanes.
