THIS WAS REPORTED TODAY, JUNE 26, 1943:
Relations between the White House and congress
strained at the breaking point today as the legislators
presented President Roosevelt with an unwanted
anti-strike weapon and the Justice department with a labor
enforcement problem of headache proportions.

A formidable new Allied aerial assault on Rabaul, principal
Jap base in the Southwest Pacific, was predicted by observers today
after official disclosure that a small Nipponese aircraft carrier and
at least 170 enemy planes are based-in the area.
    Messina, strategic straits city on the eastern end
of Sicily, was hit hard yesterday by the largest Flying For-
tress raid of the Mediterranean war, and huge fires were
left burning in the harbor and railway station.

Royal Air Force bombers early today again attacked
the industrial Ruhr valley of Germany in strength, centerng
t h e i r assault on the Bochum-Gelsenkirchcn district.
The air ministry announced t ha t 30 of It's craft, were missing
indicating probable force of about 600 of Britain's biggest
bombers took part In the assault.

WASHINGTON, June 26—
(TNS) — Relations between the White House and congress
strained at the breaking point today as the legislators
presented President Roosevelt with an unwanted
anti-strike weapon and the Justice department with a labor
enforcement problem of headache proportions.

UNITED NATIONS HEADQUARTERS IN AUSTRALIA, June 26
(INS)—A formidable new Allied aerial assault on Rabaul, principal
Jap base in the Southwest Pacific, was predicted by observers today
after official disclosure that a small Nipponese aircraft carrier and
at least 170 enemy planes are based-in the area.
The presence of the carrier and fleet of planes was discovered by
reconnaissance fliers. Otherwise, the official announcement said,
enemy shipping in the harbor of Rabaul, on New Britain island, is
reported "normal."

MESSINA, SARDINIA
ALLIED HEADQUARTERS IX NORTH AFRICA, June 26
  • (AP)—Messina, strategic straits city on the eastern end
of Sicily, was hit hard yesterday by the largest Flying For-
tress raid of the Mediterranean war, and huge fires were
left burning in the harbor and railway station.
Sardinia also came in for a heavy attack by the RAF's Wellingtons
which selected Olbia, the port and air base in the northern part of the
island, for their Thursday night target, Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower's
headquarters announced.
Docks and freight yards at both places were carpeted w i t h
mushrooming bomb bursts, the communique said.

noted for their production of coal, iron, steel, tin and zinc.
While the bombers maintained t h e devastating cycle of dark assaults
against Germany.
