Current Events June 27, 1943:

THIS WAS REPORTED TODAY, JUNE 27, 1943;
A large force of American heavy bombers attacked
airfields and industrial targets in France by daylight
Saturday, winding up the biggest week yet seen in
the mighty Allied aerial offensive which has devastated
the German war cradle in the Ruhr valley and woven a pattern
of destruction along Hitler's coastal wall.

Massed squadrons of lying Fortresses shattered
strategic sections of t h e earthquake-proof" city of
Messina Friday with their biggest
attack yet staged in the Mediterranean, it was disclosed Saturday.

Liberator and Flying Fortress bombers blasted Rabaul, New
Britain, with 20 tons of bombs Saturday on the strength of reports
that- the Japanese had 170 planes and considerable shipping, Including
a" converted aircraft carrier, concentrated Inhere.
In three successive waves they 'swept over the base in a high level
attack before dawn, roaring through a curtain of anti-aircraft fire so

LONDON, Sunday, June 27
(AP)—A large force of American heavy bombers attacked
airfields and industrial targets in France by daylight
Saturday, winding up the biggest week yet seen in
the mighty Allied aerial offensive which has devastated
the German war cradle in the Ruhr valley and woven a pattern
of destruction along Hitler's coastal wall.
A communique Issued Jointly by the U. s. Army's European theater
headquarters and the British air ministry said supporting Thunderbolts
destroyed three enemy fighters find that some unescorted bombers
shot down a "considerable number."

They unloaded their incendiaries and high explosive bombs on one
of three Rabaul airdromes and on the docks.
The bomb tonnage brought to 196 the amount dropped in seven
raids on Rabaul dating back to June 16.
