June 19, 1944; U.S. TROOPS PLUNGE FORWARD TO NORMAN PORT:

London, June 19 (UP)—
American Long Tom field pieces began shelling Cherbourg today as United States troops plunged toward" the big Norman port from the region of Monteburg and strengthened their barricade across the peninsula, behind which some 30,000 Germans were trapped.

Rome, June 19 (UP) —
 French colonial troops have fought their way across the narrow waist of Elba
to capture the insular capital of Portoferraio and now control most of the 85-square-mile island, a communique announced today, while allied forces on the Italian mainland battled through stiff German resistance on the outskirts of Perugia.

Pearl Harbor, June 19 (UP) —
United Statés troops on Saipan hammered at the approaches to Garapan, administrative center of the Marianas, today and engaged the Japanese in a bloody battle for Aslito airneld, 1449 miles from Tokyo, after smashing an enemy attempt to land an amphibious force inside the American beachhead.

United States troops tonight were within eight miles of Cherbourg, United Press Correspondent Henry T. Gorrell reported in a dispatch from the Norman peninsula timed7:50 p. m.
(The Brazzaville radio reported i without confirmation that Bricquejbee 11 miles below the city, had been captured.)
