PEARL HARBOR—United States forces may
take the offensive in the next phase of the Pacific
naval-aerial war as the result of the Midway victory
over the Japanese fleet, well informed quarters said today.

MOSCOW—The fields before the defenses of Sevastopol
today were being turned into graveyards for thousands of
German soldiers as Nazi Gen. von Mestein lavishly tossed
into battle division after division of his fifth army.
Beyond the death of thousands of his men, he accomplished little
or nothing against the staunch Soviet defenders of the vital Crimean----

Attlee Reveals 43,000 Civilians
Killed During War.
LONDON—-The first two
years of war with the, Axis cost
the British empire 43,675 civilian
lives and 50,346 civilians were injured,
Richard ' Clement Attlee,
deputy prime minister told, the
House of Commons today. '
The figures, Atlee said, 'include
civilians killed and i n j u r e d
throughout, the empire between
Sept 3, 1939, arid Sept 2, 1941.
