Numerous Prisoners Captured;
Axis Lose Guns While Trying to
Dig Into Fixed Positions
CAIRO, July 3. /P British forces tonight slashed at axis
Field Marshal Erwin Rommel's rebuffed forces on the northern"
and of the El Alamein line, 62 miles west of Alexandria, capturing
numerous prisoners and destroying a number of guns.
which the axis troops were trying to dig in on fixed positions.
(The British radio, quoting a Cairo dispatch, said tanks,
artillery and British infantry moved against the axis late in
the day but the -enemy "withdrew
rapidly from all engagements. The
CBS. did not elaborate on the
action.) .
The rumble of heavy guns could"
be heard in Alexandria," but the
fact that the fighting kept more
or less static indicated the reinforced
imperial forces had brought
the axis advance to a halt, at least
temporarily.
Dispatches from the front said
bayonet and hand-grenade fighting
continued throughout Thursday
night while most of the tanks, were
withdrawn from the . battle for
overhauling and servicing. :
Reorganizing after their first re-
pulse since the British lost To-
bruk June 21, the; main body : of
Rommel's armored forces was still
west of the El Alamein defenses.
There was no Indication they had
renewed their powerful drive
against Alexandria and the Nile
delta.
