LONDON, April 30.— Both the Eighth Army
and the American Second Corps have made small
local gains in the southeast and northwest sectors
of the Tunisian front. However, enemy counter-attacks
all along the battle front have increased in
intensity.
One Axis thrust against the Eighth Army achieved slight
success, while around Medjez el Bab the British First Army
has been-forced to yield one slope on the approaches to Tfbourba.
The Axis is being made to pay heavily in tanks and
men for every counter-drive it attempts in the desperate
stand to protect Us Tunisian bridgehead.
Meanwhile, French • troops have made a no-man's-land out of the
area immediately below Pont du Fahs. French batteries have been
shelling the city relentlessly from positions less than four miles to the
southeast and southwest.
French troops are patrolling both sides of the coastal road to Bizerta
and have reached a point seven miles from Lake Garaetachkel.
Sidi Abdallah, twelve rmles eas ot Medjez El Bab, is now in Alliec
hands. Repeated German counterattacks have failed to drive the
British First Army from their new positions, At present a fierce battle
is raging "for control of Djebel Bou Aouka but so far the Axis has suffered
heavy losses in men and tanks without regaining the key height.
Around Sidi Nimir American troops are pushing ahead in the face of
bitter German resistance.

For Coming 'Great Events'
LONDON, April. 30.—Russian a artillery pounded out destruction
to German positions along the front last night, a
brief Soviet noon communique announced to-day. No mention
was made in the bulletin of action in Kuban valley of
the~ Caucasus where German broadcasts yesterday said the
Red Army had launched a new summer offensive. The practice
of the Russians is to omit news of new campaigns until
they were under way for sometime and frequently the German
radio is the first to herald such delopments.
Moscow Radio early today however reported that Russian fliers
shot down 116 German planes in two days in the Caucasus.
