Current Events May 16th, 1943:

THIS WAS REPORTED TODAY MAY 16, 1943:
Italy and her two main island shields, Sicily and Sardinia,
were the targets today of a sustained Allied air offensive that
has reached almost to Rome itself.
American Flying fortresses, hopping off from Africa, paced the premvasion
assault yesterday with violent hammering of Civitavecchia,
an important Italian west coast port only 37 miles northwest of Rome.
Airdromes, ports, factories, railways and other varied objectives.

U.. S. forces tonight continued to hold the initiative in the North
Pacific with the principal action still confined to Attu island where
the Japanese are waging a desperate struggle to maintain their foothold
in the face of a furious five day American onslaught.

Germans have launched a series of sharp new attacks
against Russian positions in the L e n i n g r a d area, employing
massed artillery and waves of infantry, but it still was too '•
early to say whether this was the opening gun in a general
Nazi offensive.

against Russian positions in the L e n i n g r a d area, employing
massed artillery and waves of infantry, but it still was too
early to say whether this was the opening gun in a general
Nazi offensive.
Red Star, army newspaper, said the Germans first laid a heavy
barrage on Soviet lines and then sent "chains'1 of infantrymen ad-
vancing toward Leningrad in the face of heavy fire. Eight waves beat
against the defenses in a single day.
