Moscow. Monday, Oct. 5.—(AP)—The Russians held
their ground stubbornly against incessant German attacks
in the battered city of Stalingrad yesterday, a
communique said today, and maintained the initiative
northwest of the city, where the Red Army's advances
in the past few days were said to he threatening- the
entire German position. The communique neither claimed
advances for the Soviet forces nor acknowledged
withdrawals, but it appeared there was no let-up in the
intensity of the. fighting despite earlier Soviet dispatches
the Germans lacked reserves within the city.
