—(INS)—The German siege assault
on Stalingrad appeared, today
to be crumbling rapidly as
the frantic Nazis were disclosed
to have resorted In. one instance
to the desperate measure- of
driving Russian women and
children ahead of their, -attacking
tanks and infantry

GEN. DOUGLAS M'ARTHUR'S HEADQUARTERS IN AUSTRALIA,
Oct. 10.—(INS)—Allied air forces tonight were developing
a mounting offensive over all southwest Pacific sectors after U. S
Flying Fortresses dealt a shattering blow to Rabaul that may delay
any Japanese counter-drive in this area for at least a month.

34 Enemy Planes Destroyed
Or Damaged in Bombings

CAIRO. Oct. 10.- -AP—United
States air forces and the RAF destroyed
or damaged 34 enemy planes
In hard and repealed blows
throughout yesterday and last night
at Axis airdromes and supply bases
for the Egyptian battlefield.
"Extremely successful" was the
accolade of a RAF spokesman today
to the operations that extended far
behind the front to Bengasi in Libya
and to Suda bay in Crete, which
heavy U. S. bombers plastered
again. The Allies lost 12 planes.
(The Italians and Germans said
54 Allied planes were shot down
in "bitter air combats.")
