Washington, Oct. 19. —The zero hour was at hand inji
the Solomon Islands today.
American marines, soldiers and sailors were braced toj
meet a "strong assault" by heavily-reinforced Japanese^
troops on Guadalcanal Island,
American, airmen were "dishing it out." They and;'
anti-aircraft gunners bagged 17 more planes with the loss/
of only one of their own. But the Navy made no attempt
to hide the fact that the
Americans' position is critical
and that "in a battle of
this nature losses must be
expected."
The battle was for the airfield
on Guadalcanal—a clearing:
chopped out of the dense jungle by
the Japanese and captured By U.
S. Marines early in August before
the enemy had a .chance to use it.
The battleground was a 25 mile
stretch of ant-infested beach between
Cape Esperance at the
northwestern tip of Guadalcanal
and Tenaru, near; the middle of the
north shore.

London, Oct. 19. — Vichy chief
of state Pierre Laval was reported
today to have called in the
dread Nazi Gestapo in his frenzied
efforts
to force French' workers' to
take jobs in German 'war factories.
There were reports in fighting
French circles here that Adolf Hitler
was displeased with Laval's
services to the Axis cause and
would soon call him to account
for increasing anti-Nazi sentiment
in France. It was believed
Laval might be dismissed.
