Roosevelt Ends Coast-to-Coast Tour
Visited Plants,
Bases and Ports
On Secret Trip
Went 8,754 Miles
During Two Weeks;
Was in Milwaukee
WASHINGTON," Oct. 1.—
(U.P)—President Roosevelt today
completed a two-week,
8,754-mile war inspection trip
which took him from coast to
coast, the White House announced.
The White House made only
a brief announcement of the
trip. Details were withheld
until a special presidential
press conference to be held
late this afternoon.
At request of the White
House, as a special war-time
safeguard, disclosure of Mr.
Roosevelt's trip had been withheld
by  t h e  p r e s s and r a d i o until
h e  r e t u r n e d t o Washington.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 1.—(U.P)—
Reports from the Solomon islands
indicated today that t h e Japanese
a r e trying desperately to disrupt
sea communication lines t o American
occupation forces on Guadalcanal.
The navy - disclosed last night
t h a t t h e enemy succeeded in sinking
the auxiliary transport- Grego-
ry recently off Guadalcanal.
While t h e r e was no elaboration of
t h i s action, it was assumed that
t h e Gregory—a former fourstacker
destroyer which saw service
i n the last war—was t h e vict-
om of a J a p a n e s e warship.
Previously Japanese destroyers
a n d cruisers have been reported
in t h e vicinity of American positions
in t h e islands. On a number
of occasions, t h e y have sneaked in
close at night and' bombarded
American shore points, usually
w i t h inconsequential results.
