Allied troops were declared officially tonight

10.—(INS)—Allied troops were declared officially tonight
to have achieved "assured success" in their landings at many
points along a 100-mile stretch of Sicily's coast and are advancing
after overcoming initial Axis resistance.
In the opening chapter of the long-awaited battle of Europe.
Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower's eager American, British
and Canadian forces firmly consolidated their beachheads in
Sicily within only about three hours after putting ashore at
3 o'clock this morning.
