The victorious U. S. 7lh army today hurled a powerful
column east along Sicily's north coast toward Messina In a drive
to slam shut the gate of escape
behind German forces stubbornly defending Catania

Soviet troops driving on Orel scored further Rains of from 3
to 5 miles and captured several, additional populated, places: to- '
day In continuation of a push hailed by Premier Marshal Joseph Stalin
as having "complctely liquidated" Germany's 1943 summer offensive.

MOSCOW. July 24.—(INS)—
Soviet troops driving on Orel scored further Rains of from 3
to 5 miles and captured several, additional populated, places: to- '
day In continuation of a push hailed by Premier Marshal Joseph Stalin
as having "complctely liquidated" Germany's 1943 summer offensive.
Proclaiming the rout of 38 German divisions of some 500.00ft or
more craick troops. Stalin announced that "more than" 70.000 Nazi
0fficers and men were killed and vast quantities of their weapons
smashed in the 19 days from July 5 to July 21.

NORTH AFRICA. July 24.—(INS)—
The victorious U. S. 7lh army today hurled a powerful
column east along Sicily's north coast toward Messina In a drive
to slam shut the gate of escape
behind German forces stubbornly defending Catania.
The new advance, which already has carried to a point about half-
way east from fallen Palermo to the Messina strait between Sicily
and Italy, developed as other American units captured the island's
western-most port of Marsala.

Vatican Denies Pope
Sent Protest to FDR
LONDON. July 24.—(INSI—
The Vatican radio was quoted by Reuter's news agency tonight
broadcasting a denial of Axis propaganda reports to the effect
that Pope Plus XII had dispatched a personal protest to
President Roosevelt over last Monday;s American air raid on
Rome.
The broadcast. are recorded In London by the British news
agency, declared that a spokesman for the Holy St. had "emphatically
denied" the Axis story of an alleged papal protest.
