The Navy announced today the American submarine Triton, old raider of Japanese
shipping, "must be presumed to be lost," on a war patrol. The Triton was launched in Portsmouth.
British warships, boldly challenging the shore-bound
Italian fleet, were reported today to hove bombarded the
Italian mainland at Crotone, while on the land front
American and Allied troops crowded the Axis into a new
'coffin corner" trap in northeast Sicily.
Adm. William F. Halsey's headquarters announced today that the
Japanese air base at Munda, key to the enemy's defenses in the Central Solomons,
"now is in reach of capture" as American troops stormed through
the jungles within a few thousand yards of the stronghold.

The Navy announced today the American submarine Triton, old raider of Japanese
shipping, "must be presumed to be lost," on a war patrol. The Triton was launched in Portsmouth.
The Triton, which had destroyed more than a dozen enemy warships and
merchantmen, was commanded by Lt. Comdr. George Kenneth [Mackenzie,
Jr., of New York Brooklyn, N. Y.
The vessel carried a normal complement of about 60 men
it was the 10th United States, undersea boat to be lost in this
war including eight lost as a result of combat In the Pacific and two
as of non-combat incidents in the Atlantic.

An Algiers broadcast said the fleeing enemy had already
evacuated the western Sicilian cities of Palermo,
Trapani and Marsala.
The broadcast also declared that the fall of Catania,
key defense port on the Sicilian east coast, could not be delayed
much longer.

At the same time, Australian troops m New Guinea were reported
to have crushed nine Japanese counterattacks on Mt Tabu,
only a few miles below the big enemy bastion at Salamaua, strewing
the mountainside with at least 282 Japanese dead
