LONDON, Nov. 10— (AP)—Prime Minister Churchill declared
today that President Roosevelt "is the author of this
mighty undertaking" of American arms in Northwestern
Africa, and added that "in all of it I have been his active
and ardent lieutenant.''
Britain and the United took their action, he added,
for one purpose and one purpose
only; namely to gain vantage
ground from which to
open a new front a g a i n s t
Hitler and Hitlerism."
The Prime Minister said the
British Eighth Army drive to Libya
from Egypt "gives good prospect
of becoming decisive and final so
far as the defense of Egypt is concerned."
He said it was launched
"as a prelude and counterpart to
the momentous undertaking by tho
United States at the western end of
the Mediterranean . . . "
He reasserted his faith that
France will rise again, disclaimed
anew any British designs for new
territory, but added firmly:
"We mean to hold our own. I
have not become the King's first
minister in order to preside over
the liquidation of the British Empire."

Carrying the fight to the enemy,
American and Allied troops have
encircled one Japanese position on
New Guinea and apparently are
holding the tipper hand on Guadalcanal
Island in the embattled Solomons.

WASHINGTON, Nov. 10. — 0P) —
Switzerland has taken over the rep-
sentation of Vichy French intr-
ests in the United States, it was disclosed
at the State Department today.
Former Trench Ambassador Gaston
Henry-Haye was free to communicate
with his Government
through the Swiss legation, it was
said.
In answer to questions as to the
status of French diplomats and consular
officials in this country. State
Department officials emphasize that
Henry-Haye is free to come and go
in every respect.
Neither he nor his subordinates in
Washington or elsewhere are being
held incommunicado, said the offijcials,
who declined to be quoteu by
name.

LONDON, Nov. 10.—(AP)—Reuters reported tonight that
United States troops, supported by tanks, have entered the
outskirts of Casablanca.
Reuters also said the German radio reported tonight that
the Bey of Tunis had consented to the passage of United
States troops through Tunisia.

LONDON, Nov. 10.—Oran, French naval port on the Medi-
terranean Coast of Africa, has fallen to an American tank
attack and Casablanca, on the Atlantic, apparently was near-
"ng the Axis from North Africa.
The occupation
of Oran within a few hours after Amerl*
can tanks launched an all-out assault was announced In
communique No. 4 from Allied headquarters.
It said that with Oran in American hands and, Algiers
already having surrendered, French resistance on the Mediterranean
Coast was virtually ended.
