LONDON, Nov. 21.—(INS)—
Advancing American, British
and French troops, supported by
many tanks and planes, tonight
tightened their siege of semi-isolated
German and Italian
forces resisting a growing Allied
assault on the northeast corner
of Tunisia.
Coming to close grips with the
foe in a battle to decide possession
of the entire north African coast,
constantly reinforced Allied armored
and infantry units, were
pressing hard against a narrowing
perimeter of Axis defenses shielding
the Bizerte naval base and the
Tunisian capital of Tunis.

LONDON, Nov. 21.—(INS)—
The industrial heart of Turin,
Italy's main arsenal city, was a
blazing shambles tonight in the
wake of the war's greatest raid
on the Italian homeland—an
assault in which British bombers
last night loosed scores of
two-ton "block busters" and
torrents of fire bombs.
Benito Mussolini's high command
itself admitted that "very great'
damage was inflicted and 149 casualties
counted thus far as a result
of ..the RAF attack, while report!
from the continent told of increasing
outcries for peace among the
people of northern Italy.

Nazis Get Winter Garb
But They're Still Cold
MOSCOW, Nov. 21.—(AP)—
Some of the German army's
winter equipment has appeared
on the eastern front, and
though it is better than, last
winter's, it still is insufficient
to cope with the rigors of the
Russian climate, front line reports
said today.
A dispatch to Red Star, army
newspaper, said some German
troops in the Leningrad sector
had winter uniforms, but many
divisions thus far have received
no winter outfits.
Winter clothes which were issued
to one German division
were said to consist of. wicker
wrappings for the feet, with
artificial rubber soles, padded
cotton jackets and cotton caps.
The padded caps were given
only to sentries, Red Star said,
other troop* being provided
only with brown woolen cloths
to wrap around their heads.
The German winter uniforms
are described as lined
with white cloth so they can be
turned inside out for camouflage
in the snow.
Shivering German prisoners
are quoted as saying emphatically
that they are not warm in
the wehrmacht's winter uniforms.

Jap Bases Blasted
WASHINGTON, Nov. 21.—(INS)
American forces, in a series of
tough and bloody jungle battles,
gained new ground today in the
Solomon Islands.
A Navy Department communique
disclosed that heavy fighting is continuing-
between the U. S. marines
and army troops and the Japanese
on Guadalcanal. American planes—
the powerful Flying Fortresses —
were also said to have dealt increased
punishment to the Japanese
bases on Bougainville, 600 miles
north of the American positions on
Guadalcanal.
United States air squadrons carried
out 11 separate attacks on
Japanese positions on Guadalcanal.
Other aerial activity, including a
blasting of the enemy's Buin base
at Bougainville, netted two more
Japanese planes for a total of 612
that American forces have destroyed
in the Solomons campaign.
