Roosevelt Says
Defeat of Axis
Powers Is Inevitable
WASHINGTON, (UP). — President
Roosevelt reported on this
Armistice Day that United Nations
forces were being joined by "large
numbers" of French troops in a
war which is certain to end in "inevitable,
final defeat" of the Axis.
Speaking in the amphitheater of
the Arlington national cemetery
overlooking the tomb of the unknown
soldier, Mr. Roosevelt remembered
"with gratitude the
bravery of the men who fought and
helped to win that fight against
German militarism" m 1918.

Petain Tells French They May Defend Selves-
Italians Resisted at Border-—Fleet Said To Have
Left Toulon To Join Allies
By The Associated Press
France's aged Marshal Petain declared today that the
1940 German-French armistice had been broken as Nazi
troops marched into the old unoccupied zone and Vichy
reports received in Bern said he had set France free to
defend herself against the Axis.
Unconfirmed reports said the French fleet, once the
second most powerful in Europe, had already set out
from Toulon to join the United Nations.
Italian troops also marched into southern France,
and rumors circulated that French Alpine troops had
fought with the invaders at the frontier.
Italian troops also marched into southern France,
and rumors circulated that French Alpine troops had
fought with the invaders at the frontier.
Reports from the French frontier said Petain, after
protesting sadly and in vain against Hitler's violation of
the armistice, declared he would not interfere in any
way with French resistance to the Germans.
Hitler Makes His Excuses
Hitler's excuse., as explained in a long message to
Petain in which he posed as France's friend, was that
he was moving to counter a scheduled Allied invasion
of Corsica and the French mainland.
