China crowned seven hard years of war Friday with a smashing victory which broke the siege of Hengyang and threw into a 25-mile retreat a great Japanese army menacing the Hankow-Canton railway

LONDON <•£>!—
Three weeks of steady bombardment by robot planes  have stirred a blacker hatred here for Hitler and the nazis than the 1940-41 blitz ever produced but there is no more question now than then that London can take it.

China crowned seven hard years of war Friday with a smashing victory which broke the siege of Hengyang and threw into a 25-mile retreat a great Japanese army menacing the Hankow-Canton railway.
This sudden, stunning blow to Japanese arms made the Pacific war news unanimously unpleasant for Tokyo, which also had to reckon with the imminent Bataanlike end of its troops on Saipan and a new island invasion In the
southwest Pacific. And a Japanese general conceded defeat in the
attempt to invade India.

(Bunelle, chief of The Associated Press bureau in London is a veteran of the blitz )
Streets are not so crowded as before the raids began it s easier to get a table at restaurants and many persons are leaving the city.
Some theaters have closed down Subway stations are doing a record service as shelters Nevertheless. in offices factories and homes — many now wmdowless—
work and life in London go on about as usual
As in the blitz many Londoners find it hard to get sufficient sleep Many are camping out in apartment house corridors under staircases or other improvised
nooks of comparative safety But everywhere there is evident a spirit of determination and even gay camaraderie that existed during the blitz
                                             Frightful Weapon
The consensus is solid that the buzz bomb is a more frightful weapon than the kind dropped by planes piloted by humans People generally view it like the frenzied
thrashing of a mortally wounded animal They hope it will stop but
are pretty well resigned that It or something worse will likely continue
to the wars end
Personal reactions to an Individual buzz bomb are about the same as those to a near miss from the old type But the buzz bomb has a greater ability to create an impression that it has got not only jour name on it but also your street address.
In the old days when a Londoner heard a German plane directly overhead he knew he was safe from bombs which were bound by the laws of physics to drop beyond. Now the rough throated roar of a robot aircraft is the signal of imminent danger and even the bravest and most unselfish are inclined to use body English to try to get it over to the next street before the motor cuts and plummets down.
Worst of all is the period of silence between the time the motor stops and the time the bomb lands and explodes—worse than waiting for the other shoe to drop — and even the sturdiest hearts do cart wheels.
