Americans Half Mile from
Duren in Big Breakthrough

German defenses of the Roer River virtually collapsed .yesterday as American First army troops swept through seven fortified villages fought within one- half-mile of the key city of Duren and -pushed up to the Roer on a 1,000-yard front east of Hurtgen Forest.
As the enemy cracked under the relentless pressure of Lieut. Gen. Courtney Hodges" -men and armor, the Yanks crashed through the rubbled rows of Hoven, S.hophoven, Pier, Merken. Merode, Gey" and Derweisheller all within a six mile arc from northwest to southwest of Duren.

The Red Army yesterday captured Godollo. Last major rail fortress 10 1/2 miles northeast of Budapest, the Russian
communique announced last night, as other Moscow advices said Soviet storm troops had "burst into the eastern suburbs of the bombed and shell torn Hungarian capital.
