German
defenses of the Roer River virtually collapsed .yesterday as American
First army troops swept through seven fortified villages fought within one- half-mile
of the key city of Duren and -pushed up to the Roer on a 1,000-yard front east
of Hurtgen Forest.
As the enemy
cracked under the relentless pressure of Lieut. Gen. Courtney Hodges" -men
and armor, the Yanks crashed through the rubbled rows of Hoven, S.hophoven,
Pier, Merken. Merode, Gey" and Derweisheller all within a six mile arc
from northwest to southwest of Duren.

Budapest, the Russian
communique
announced last night, as other Moscow advices said Soviet storm troops had
