Giant Japanese Vessel
Fires On Oil Refinery
Washington — The War Department
announced that Army and
Navy aircraft and surface vessels
had started to search for the enemy
submarine which shelled the
Bankline Oil Refinery, near Ellwood,
California, Just south of
Santa Barbara, during Monday evening.

WASHINGTON. Feb. 25. (U. P.)
Secretary of the Navy Knox declared
today that there is no positive
evidence that there were any
planes in the Los Angeles area
during the night.
"My understanding Is that no
planes were found," he said.
Knox said his information indicated
it was "just a false alarm."
"There were no planes over Los
Angeles last night, at least that's
our understanding," the secretary
declared. "None have been found
and a very wide reconnaissance
has been carried out."
