BRITISH AND NAZIS IN SEA FIGHT
Siege of Stalingrad Lifted as 22 Axis
Divisions Wiped Out by Advancing Reds
MOSCOW, Dec. 31 —(UP) —The Soviet government announced
new gains on the Stalingrad front tonight, while the
Red army was making new advances on the Rzev front west
of Moscow.
A survey of the recent campaign
revealed that the Nazi army
in Stalingrad was virtually liquidated,
having lost 95,000 men
killed and 72,000 taken prisoners
in the last six weeks.
Simultaneously it was announced
that The Red army had just taken
the town and railroad station of
Oblinskaya, 70 miles southwest of
Stalingrad on the west bank of
the Don. Four smaller Towns
known as regional centers were
captured in the same area.

Major Naval Action Reported in North
By British Admiralty; Sink Axis Craft
LONDON, Dec. 31—(UP)—Some sort of a major naval battle
between units of the British and German fleets appeared tonight
to be in progress in northern waters, probably off Norway.
An official British admiralty
announcement said that an enemy
cruiser and a destroyer had been
put out of action. The destroyer
was reported in sinking condition
when last seen.
