Roosevelt Says 1943 Will Net Advances On Roads to Berlin, Rome and Tokyo;
Cites 'Mathematical Basis'-of Whipping Japs As Their Shipping Strength Declines.

President Roosevelt told a victory pledged
congress today the cause of United Nations was
moving forward at last in Europe, Asia, and Africa, back-
ed by a "miracle of production" in the United States, and
said 1943 carried the promise of a very substantial advance
the roads that lead lo Berlin and Rome and
Tokyo."

NAZIS CAPTURE CROSSROAD IN MATEUR SECTION
Germans Announce U. S. Paratroops Wiped Out Behind African Lines

LONDON -- Reuters reported from Allied headquarters in North
Africa today (hat the Germans had recaptured positions on both
sides of an. important crossroads West of Mateur.
The heights, 15 miles west of Mateur. which itself is 20 miles
southwest of Bizerte, had been captured the day before yesterday
by a British infantry brigade and commando troops In a dawnassault.

Fall of Rostov Would Cut Off Whole German Army Of The Caucasus

MOSCOW—The Red army of the lower Don has broken through
German lines on a 20-mile front on both sides of the river and has
d r i v e n within 75 miles of Rostov, key to the whole Nazi salient into
the Caucasus, the Russians announced today.
Dispatches from the front said the Russian forces, commanded
by Lieut. Gen. Constantin Rokossovsky, veteran of last Winters battle of Moscow, had pushed forward 50 miles since capturing fhe Don River bridgehead 
of Tsimlyansk two days ago.

New Guinea Foes Seek Weak Spots
Several Japs Killed In Patrol Actions Near Tarnkena

Somewhere in New Guinea
Allied and Japanese patrols were probing in swamp mud today for
weak spots in opposite lines as the allies regrouped their land
forces for an attack on the enemy stronghold at Sanananda.
American troops pushed back one Japanese patrol in the vicinity of
Tarakena, a village midway between the recently won Buna station
and Sanananda Point. They killed one Japanese and wounded another.
