Russian Forces Cut Rostov-Moscow Railway
Enemy in Caucasus
Is Reported To Be
In 'Complete Rout'

MOSCOW, Jan. 16.- (Saturday). (AP) A red army surging .
across the Keliva river cut the Rostov-Moscow railway 'yes-
day at Glubokuya and, reached a point 90 miles northeast
of Rostov, nazi communications center serving Southern Russia,
it was announced officially early today.
This fresh" spurt by :Col.' Gen. Xikulin Vakulin's Middle
Don forces .came simultaneously' with sweeping, Riussian gains
in the Caucasus" where the Germans failed to halt the red
tide, and the communique said “the enemy there was "in complete
rout”.

Allied Subs Attack Axis
Ships, Ports In Italy
London, Jan. 15. (AP) Strong and effective attacks along
the Mediterranean Sea front by. British submarines which
sank four axis ships, and probably three-more, and shelled
the southern shore of, the. nervus Italian mainland highlighted
the North African campaign today. .
Attacks by allied planes on both the Tunisian and Libyan
ends, of the line, were, announced. Announced. No action
of consequence was reported from Gen. Eisenhower's allied
headquarters.


Allies-Break Jap Lines; 152 of Enemy Killed
Sanananda Area, Scene Of Bloody Fighting
Allied Headquarters in Australia, Jan. .16. (Saturday). (AP) An allied
break-through at Sanananda, New Guinea, in which at least 152 Japa
nese were killed in-one day's fight ing Thursday was reported in to
day's noon communique by Gen Douglas MacArthur. . .
Sanananda, immediately north west of Buna on the northeast New
Guinea .coast, is "the only spot in all the Papuan Peninsula still held
by a fragment of a Jap army which once totaled 15,000. There jungle
fortifications plus, swampy conditions caused by recent rains has
slowed up the cleanup drive.
