$108 Billion Budget Given To Congress
Chief Advocates 'Harsh Program' to Raise War Needs
WASHINGTON, Jan. 11.—
(U.P.)—President Roosevelt today submitted to congress for
the 1944 fiscal year a $108,903,047,923 "maximum effort" war
budget. calling; for new taxes and forced saving's to raise an
additional $16,000,000,000 of revenue annually.
That would increase treasury gross revenue to-451,000,000,000--a
year, enabling the present generation to bear about half the war
cost as we fight.

Guinea Troops Approaching New Jap Lines
GENERAL MacARTHUR'S HEADQUARTERS, Australia,
Jan 11.— (U.P.)---The United States troops, opening' direct operations
against the last Japanese in Papuan New Guinea, have
captured Tarakena village, one and a half miles from Sanananda
point, where the enemy is pinned against his beach-head,
Gen. Douglas MacArthur announced today.
The Americans advanced up the coast from Buna to take the village,
which lies southeastward of Sanananda point at the mouth of a
small creek.
Kill 40 Japs
They killed 40 Japanese in their advance and captured five machine
guns and a mortar. Directly inland from the point, the Americans and A-stralians
were moving slowly but steadily along (ho trail which leads to the
interior and were reported only about one and a half miles from the
main Japanese positions.

17 More Places In Caucasus Fall to Reds
MOSCOW, Jan. 11.—(U.P)—
Russian troops have captured Georgievsk, major rail junction
275 miles southeast of Rostov, a special Soviet communique said
today. Georgievsk is a major junction on the most important
rail system in the Caucasus area.

TO ROMMEL
LONDON, Jan. II. —(UP) —A back door" threat to the big Axis
base of Tripoli was reported^ to have developed today as Marshal
Erwin Rommel hastily attempted to throw up defense lines to lialt tlie
advance of the British Eighth army toward the city.
French Approach Radio Dakar said a strong:
French force had fought its way from southern Tunisia into Tripplitania
and was menacing an .important Italian position less than
300 miles southwest of Tripoli. The London Evening Standard, which
recorded the Radio Dakar broadcast, described fierce fighting north
of Ghadames and about 25 miles inside Tripolitania.
The French force would represent the fourth threat to Tripoli. The
British JKighth army is pressing westward toward the city, Allied
planes from Tunisia have bombed the Tripoli airport and there is a
Fighting French force moving; up from Lake Chad to strike at Tripoli
from the south.Bases Bombed.
