LONDON, Feb. 8.—(AP)—The fall of Kursk, one of the principal
bastions of the German 1941.-42 winter line, in a smashing
Soviet offensive was announced tonight in a special
Russian communique, marking a victory approaching in importance
the Russian triumph at Stalingrad. As the crumbling of this northern
pivot of the Nazi defense line was announced, pressure was increased
on another of the key Nazi defenses—Rostov, - gateway to the
Caucasus, where the Russians are besieging the city from the south
and another column is driving down from the north.
The capture of Kursk imperiled the entire German defense line in.
Russia.

LONDON. Feb. 8. —INS----
United States and British bombers. striking at Axis-held Europe
from both its Mediterranean and Atlantic sides, were reveal-
ed tonight to have left huge fires rising from blocks of ruins
at the Italian port of Naples and the U-boat base at Lorient,!
France.
Both ports, nearly 1.000 miles apart, sustained their most, devas-
tating raids of the war in a re- newed Allied air offensive in which
American and British planes also battered a large enemy airdrome
and a seaplane base on Sardinia island and raked railways on Sicily.
The German Ruhr also was bombed..

WASHINGTON. Feb. 8.-.INS
Sea. air and ground lighting continued today between U. S. and
Japanese forces in the Solomon islands area, but reports to the Navy
Department indicated that there has been no change in the general
situation during the past 24 hours. American infantry detachments,
with air support, were believed to be making further progress against
encircled enemy troops in northwestern Guadalcanal while American
and Japanese naval task forces sparred for openings as they
maneuvered in the vicinity of the island
Silent On Rennell Clash
In the absence of a communique the progress of these engage-
ments. a Navy Department spokesman said:
The situation is unchanged in the South Pacific. and for reasons
explained in previous communiques. no further announcement
will be made at this time."
